Movie Review: The Loneliest Planet Guides Us to a Land Where ...

Julia Loktev?s The Loneliest Planet follows a young couple trekking across Caucasus Mountains, sampling local food, poking around abandoned?buses? making love in grimy hotels. They hire a guide and set out on a multi-day hike through gorgeous countryside. Interspersed with scenes of playful candor between Nica (Hani Furstenberg) and Alex (Gael Garcia Bernal) are wide-angle shots of the couple and the guide making their way through a dwarfing landscape. And so we have the ?lonely planet? as existential metaphor and hap-tip to the eponymous travel guide, and both meanings of the title end up informing an aspect of the film?s thematic concern. There is a tension in the film between the tourist and the pilgrim, between the person who travels to consume the exotic, and the person for whom the otherness of the exotic locale leaves an indelible mark on the soul.

Loktev?s film starts out slowly, deliberately so. Shot in a candid, handheld manner, we simply watch as these two lovers set out on the journey. And while there is a slight sense of tension in the air ? we never know whether or not to trust their guide, or fear their surroundings ? there also really doesn?t seem to be anything of consequence. This is Loktev?s method, immersing us a familiar sense of travel, while distancing the enough to recognize the arbitrariness of it. Nica and Alex roll around in grass, cross streams on wobbly bridges and fill their canteens from mountain springs. All the while there guide cracks awkward jokes or listens to the still air.

Then there is a sudden twist that sets The Loneliest Planet in motion. It is hardly a moment, followed by an even lesser moment, that nonetheless drives an unexpected rift between the traveling couple. Without giving away this surprise, which is one of the film?s only really moments of action, it only needs to be said that The Loneliest Planet becomes a rumination on love and instinct, on depth of character and how our amorous appetites can be challenged by the simple conformation with something profound.

There is finesse to Loktev?s light touch, and the film is so subtle and quiet you respect the understated craft in it. Credit must also go to Garcia Bernal and Furstenberg, whose natural candor and palpable sensuality support Loktev?s minimalism, while keeping us engaged with romantic banter that feels close. Another thread that holds this delicate movie together is its portrayal of sexuality, both intimate and incessant.?And yet Loktev underplays her hand a little. We spend too long wandering aimlessly before we are drawn in by what the filmmaker is really up to. That dampens the film?s overall effect, and leaves the lingering feeling that what we have is a 40 minute short film drawn-out to feature form.

Electronics: Graphene sheets' growing attractions

Dec. 10, 2012 ? A theoretical and numerical study of graphene sheets reveals a property that may lead to novel opto-electric devices and circuits.

One-atom-thick sheets of carbon -- known as graphene -- have a range of electronic properties that scientists are investigating for potential use in novel devices. Graphene's optical properties are also garnering attention, which may increase further as a result of research from the A*STAR Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). Bing Wang of the IMRE and his co-workers have demonstrated that the interactions of single graphene sheets in certain arrays allow efficient control of light at the nanoscale1.

Light squeezed between single graphene sheets can propagate more efficiently than along a single sheet. Wang notes this could have important applications in optical-nanofocusing and in superlens imaging of nanoscale objects. In conventional optical instruments, light can be controlled only by structures that are about the same scale as its wavelength, which for optical light is much greater than the thickness of graphene. By utilizing surface plasmons, which are collective movements of electrons at the surface of electrical conductors such as graphene, scientists can focus light to the size of only a few nanometers.

Wang and his co-workers calculated the theoretical propagation of surface plasmons in structures consisting of single-atomic sheets of graphene, separated by an insulating material. For small separations of around 20 nanometers, they found that the surface plasmons in the graphene sheets interacted such that they became 'coupled' (see image). This theoretical coupling was very strong, unlike that found in other materials, and greatly influenced the propagation of light between the graphene sheets.

The researchers found, for instance, that optical losses were reduced, so light could propagate for longer distances. In addition, under a particular incoming angle for the light, the study predicted that the refraction of the incoming beam would go in the direction opposite to what is normally observed. Such an unusual negative refraction can lead to remarkable effects such as superlensing, which allows imaging with almost limitless resolution.

As graphene is a semiconductor and not a metal, it offers many more possibilities than most other plasmonic devices, comments the IMRE's Jing Hua Teng, who led the research. "These graphene sheet arrays may lead to dynamically controllable devices, thanks to the easier tuning of graphene's properties through external stimuli such as electrical voltages." Graphene also allows for an efficient coupling of the plasmons to other objects nearby, such as molecules that are adsorbed on its surface. Teng therefore says that the next step is to further explore the interesting physics in graphene array structures and look into their immediate applications.

Baseball-Tigers' Verlander not throwing in the towel

DETROIT, Oct 28 (Reuters) - The odds are stacked against them but Justin Verlander believes the Detroit Tigers have the talent, temperament and personality to become the first team to overcome a 3-0 deficit and win the World Series.

"Obviously it's not another day at the office, but it's not desperation, either," Verlander said before Sunday night's game against the San Francisco Giants.

"Not going to be easy, but we definitely have the team to do it. Our pitching could line up well, and just play the game we've played all year and see what happens."

The Tigers are clearly on the ropes but if they could win on Sunday to trim the Giants' lead to 3-1, Verlander, arguably the game's best pitcher, would start in Monday's Game Five.

Verlander said the Giants were "built on good pitching and defense and scoring opportune runs."

"That recipe has led to postseason success for them thus far," he said. "Obviously it's going to be tough to beat a team like that four in a row, but if anybody is capable of it, we are."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland bristled at suggestions that he switch the line-up around even though his club has been shut out the last two games of the series.

Detroit's two big guns, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, were a combined three for 19 with one RBI in the World Series.

"Everybody talks about lineup," he said. "That's a real big topic around Detroit most of the time.

"Our lineup it what it is, and we're playing in a World Series. I'm not afraid to make adjustments, but down three games to none, it's a little late for changing a lineup.

"We're here, and that's pretty good, the fact that we're here, and now we've got to try to figure out a way to win a game."

Detroit's Max Scherzer, 1-0 with a stellar 0.82 ERA in the playoffs, was facing Giants' Matt Cain (2-2, 3.52 in the postseason) in Sunday night's match-up of right-handers.

Should the Tigers survive and play on Monday, it would be a repeat of the opening game pitching match-up between Verlander and Giants southpaw Barry Zito. San Francisco rocked Verlander and won 8-3 as Zito pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball.

All 23 teams who have led the World Series 3-0 have gone on to win. Twenty won the series in four straight, while the other three needed five games to win the title.

The Tigers beat the New York Yankees in four straight in the American League Championship Series and Verlander, the 2011 Cy Young Award winner, is hoping history can repeat itself.

"Hey, we won four in a row against the Yankees," he said. "Who's to say we can't do it against these guys?" (Editing by Julian Linden)

Sprint releases push-to-talk app for Android

Android Central

Sprint has launched an Android app to allow push-to-talk on some phones. The Kyocera Rise budget phone will support it, as will the upcoming LG Optimus Elite, it said.

Push-to-talk is a transmission method that turns your phone into a walkie-talkie, of sorts. The type that only allows communication one-way at a time, so like an air traffic controller, you’ll have to say “over” after each sentence, and of course “over and out” when your conversation is done.

For cell users, push-to-talk cellular is supposed to give people a way to quickly broadcast a message to receiving handsets. If multiple handsets are hooked up, a team leader can speak to all of them without ringing each one up individually.

Some apps already emulate this function, like HeyTell and Zello, but the Sprint app uses the carrier’s Direct Connect push-to-talk service. Sprint says it has a million users on Direct Connect already (most on rugged handsets), and hopes the app will allow it to tap into a new user-base.

Sprint customers can hit the Google Play link above to download the app.

Report: Some dietary supplements illegally labeled

This undated photo released by the Office of Inspector General of Department of Health and Human Services shows a label from a dietary supplement. (AP Photo/Office of Inspector General of Department of Health and Human Services)

(AP) ? Dozens of weight loss and immune system supplements on the market are illegally labeled and lack the recommended scientific evidence to back up their purported health claims, government investigators warn in a new review of the $20 billion supplement industry.

The report, being released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general, found that 20 percent of the 127 weight loss and immune-boosting supplements investigators purchased online and in retail stores across the country carried labels that made illegal claims to cure or treat disease.

Some products went so far as to state that the supplements could cure or prevent diabetes or cancer, or that they could help people with HIV or AIDS, which is strictly prohibited under federal law.

Consumers may not just be wasting their money on pills or tablets, but they could be endangering their health if they take a supplement in place of a drug thinking it will have the same effect, the report concluded.

"Consumers rely on a supplement's claims to determine whether the product will provide a desired effect, such as weight loss or immune support," the report said. "Supplements that make disease claims could mislead consumers into using them as replacements for prescription drugs or other treatments for medical conditions, with potentially dangerous results."

The market for dietary supplements ? which can include anything from Vitamin C tablets to capsules of Echinacea ? is a huge one with hundreds of products. The inspector general's investigation focused on one segment that officials said is booming.

Federal regulations do not require the Food & Drug Administration to review supplement companies' scientific evidence for most of their products' purported health benefits before they hit the market.

The Office of Inspector General found that in numerous cases, when companies did submit evidence to back up their health claims, it fell far short of government recommendations.

One company submitted a 30-year-old handwritten college term paper to substantiate its claim, while others included news releases, advertisements and links to Wikipedia or an online dictionary, according to the report.

Overall, the review raises questions about whether the system is allowing companies to mislead consumers, investigators said, and recommended that FDA ramp up its oversight. The report did not name individual brands or products, and also did not estimate the total number of dietary supplements on the market.

In response, the food safety agency said it would consider asking Congress for more oversight powers to review supplement companies' evidence proving their products' purported health benefits. FDA agreed that the agency should expand surveillance of the market to detect spurious claims that supplements can cure or treat specific diseases.

Investigators also found that 7 percent of the weight loss and immune support supplements they surveyed lacked the required disclaimer stating that FDA had not reviewed whether the statement on the label was truthful.

Reid Not Through Yet With Online Gambling Efforts: States in Uproar ...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is reportedly seeking opportunities to pass through a controversial Internet poker bill during a short window of time known as the Lame Duck Session.?

The National Conference of State Legislatures is unhappy that Reid?s bill calls for federal control over the industry with his home state of Nevada acting as the ultimate beneficiary.?

?The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) believes the federal government must respect the sovereignty of states to allow or to prohibit Internet gambling by their residents.? It went on: ?NCSL requests Congress consider the perspective of the states as it examines this issue and asks that it involve state legislators in any federal efforts that seek to reform the regulation of online gaming.?

From The New American:

The federal legalization would effectively take authority away from state governments because under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution, when states and the federal government both exercise authority in a legislative area, the federal government?s rights supersede state governments.

And it?s not just the individual states that are unhappy with Reid?s efforts, as explained by The New American:

Another organization, the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL), whose members include Canadian provinces as well as American states, has warned of potential harm from Reid?s proposal. Margaret DeFrancisco, chair of the Government Relations Committee of that organization states:

It?s all money that the states absolutely rely on?. We don?t want to be restricted by the federal government telling us what gaming policy should be in the states?. The summary that we have seen is not terribly friendly to lotteries.? It?s very restrictive. We don?t want and we don?t need any federal legislation concerning lotteries. Period.?

She also notes that the proposal seems intended just to help Reid?s home state: ?This seems to be something just for Nevada. But for lotteries, we represent almost all of the country.?

[Advertisement:? Camasino allows free play online poker with your friends via webcam and/or avatar creation.? Play for real money if you like outside the US]

Camasino-071812L.jpg

Most of the firms pumping money into lobbying efforts for the federal legislation are based out of Nevada.? States like New Jersey and Delaware are also interested in acting as hubs for Internet gambling companies.?

James Kosta of 3G Studios tells Gambling911.com that Nevada needs to be at the forefront of the Web gambling industry, pointing out their expertise in regulating existing casino operations.? But even Kosta is skeptical about the Reid and Senator Dean Heller (R-Nev) proposed legislation.?

?We work closely with Reid and Heller,? Kosta told Gambling911.com.? ?The bill gives Nevada a head start. Only states that have a proven history of regulating gaming should get into this. States that haven?t had experience in regulation would be an absolute mess. Nevada is considered the gold standard in terms of gaming control. Even speaking to the European operators, they say the same thing.

?But for my company, I am a little fearful because federally legalized gambling, if it goes through establishing a poker commission and that sort of thing, it will become a mess. It will be extremely expensive. You will only see the biggest players. We would like to see a state-led process. The only thing that Reid and Heller are arguing is whether the bill should go through the House or Senate first.

?Delaware has just approved online gambling, but as they are a state with a population of only 947,000 people, they have to come up with $15 million a year for the regulation. So people in the state are saying, ?Why don?t we just partner with Nevada?? We say, if you are certified in Nevada, you are certified here. Believe it or not, there are over 10 states in negotiations with Nevada to create reciprocity. I think that is the way we are going to go, state compacts.?

Activists: 2 explosions rock northern Syrian city

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian activists say two powerful explosions have rocked the center of the northern city of Aleppo, causing casualties and heavy material damage.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammad Saeed says the explosions went off minutes apart Wednesday at the city's main square. He says the blasts appear to have been caused by car bombs and were followed by heavy gunfire.

The area is controlled by Syrian government forces. The target of the explosions was not immediately clear.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported three powerful explosions at the main square in Aleppo but had no word on the number of casualties.

Aleppo is Syria's commercial capital and there has been heavy fighting there for days between government troops and rebels trying to oust President Bashar Assad.

Manhunt continues for murder suspect in state park

A massive manhunt is underway in upstate New York for Eugene Palmer, who is suspected of killing his daughter-in-law outside her home last Monday and fleeing to nearby Harriman State Park. NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

By NBC News staff

A massive manhunt for a 73-year-old wanted for the murder of his daughter-in-law continued in upstate New York, where police are still searching for Eugene Palmer in the thick woods of a 46,000-acre state park.?

Search teams including officers, dogs and a helicopter have been looking for Palmer around the clock for the past week, after his truck was found in the Harriman State Park area. Bloodhounds traced his trial to a campsite, before the trail went cold.

"The woods are too thick for a general sweep," Haverstraw Police Chief Charles Miller said last week. "There are so many places to hide ... [Or] he could have made it to a road and gotten picked up by somebody, and he could be staying elsewhere."

Authorities hunting for 73-year-old accused of killing his daughter-in-law

Eugene Palmer, of Haverstraw, is accused of killing his estranged daughter-in-law, Tammy Palmer, 39, who lived in a trailer 50 feet from his house, The New York Times reported.?His sister, Elaine Babcock, said he stopped by her nearby home Monday morning, gave her money for his property taxes, and then told her that he had killed Palmer before asking her to wait an hour before calling police.

But Babcock immediately called 911, The Journal News in New York's Hudson Valley reported. Officers said a separate 911 caller heard three gunshots coming from the home; they found Tammy Palmer, who has two teenage sons with Eugene's son, dead on the ground behind her trailer, NBCNewYork.com reported.

"She doesn't deserve to be dead," Tammy's mother, Violet Pannirello, told NBC News.

Flyers are posted all over the park to inform visitors about Palmer, whom police say is armed and dangerous.

"I'm concerned, but I'm not overly terrified, but I still don't want to be outside alone, or anything," area resident Allison Potanovic told NBC News.

Tammy Palmer and John Palmer had been married for about 17 years, John Pannirello, Tammy's father, told The New York Times, but they separated five months ago, and in the past few weeks, they had been in a custody battle over the kids.

Eugene Palmer, a former truck driver, is an avid hunter who loves the outdoors. His family says he knows every inch of the woods in the area, but Palmer also has diabetes and has recently suffered a heart attack. This week, officials started sending out cadaver dogs.

"It's a very difficult place to survive. He's been out there seven days, if he is still here, he'd have to be very adaptable to these types of conditions in order to survive that long," New York State Park Police Maj. David Herrick told NBC News.

NBC's Elizabeth Chuck contributed to this report.

(AP) ? Same chaotic, champagne dance-party scene in the clubhouse just two days later. New T-shirt: AL West champions.

The Oakland Athletics won the division title with another improbable rally in a season full of them, coming back from four runs down and a 13-game division deficit to stun the two-time defending league champion Texas Rangers 12-5 on Wednesday.

"We knew this is a beast of a team we would have to beat, and to be able to beat them three games in a row and win the division on top of it, really it's a magical-type thing," manager Bob Melvin said.

Josh Hamilton dropped a fly ball in center field for a two-run error that put the A's (94-68) ahead 7-5 in a six-run fourth inning. The A's only added to Texas' troubles the rest of the way.

While Hamilton's Rangers (93-69) are headed to the new one-game, wild-card playoff, the A's get some time off before opening the division series in their first postseason appearance since 2006.

Both teams had to wait to learn their opponents from a pair of night games: Boston at New York, and Baltimore at Tampa Bay.

"You can have all the experience as you want but when you run into a team that's hot, experience has nothing to do with it," Texas manager Ron Washington said.

The A's would earn the AL's No. 1 seed if the Yankees lose, and open the division series at the winner of Friday's wild-card playoff featuring the Rangers. If New York wins, Oakland would be the No. 2 seed and begin at Detroit.

The A's needed a sweep and they delivered to win their first division crown in six years and 15th in all. They overcame a five-game deficit in the final nine days and took sole possession of the West's top spot for the first time this year.

"It shows how important Game 162 is," Oakland's Jonny Gomes said. "I don't think it took 162 to games to check the character of this ballclub."

Grant Balfour retired Michael Young on a fly to center for the final out, then raised his arms in the air as the A's streamed out of the dugout and began bouncing up and down in the infield.

"2012 AL WEST CHAMPIONS" flashed on the scoreboard two days after the A's clinched a playoff spot Monday and held a wild dance party in the clubhouse.

"I'm glad there's not one tomorrow or Friday," owner Lew Wolff said. "I can relax and go home. I'm running out of underwear."

Players high-fived fans while taking a victory lap through the rundown Coliseum, where the outfield still has a light patch of grass from football in the venue shared by the NFL's Raiders.

Soon, the celebratory champagne and beer made its way to the field ? and players sprayed it into the stands. The A's returned to the field almost an hour later to greet fans still gathered along the top of the dugout.

Oakland pulled off another remarkable performance in a season defined by thrilling walkoffs, rallies and whipped-cream pie celebrations by a team that was never supposed to be here.

A club that trailed Texas by 13 games on June 30. A club with a $59.5 million payroll, lowest in baseball. General manager Billy Beane found ways to get a blue-collar franchise back to the playoffs for the first time since being swept by Detroit in the 2006 AL championship series.

Coco Crisp hit a tying two-run double in the fourth against Derek Holland (12-7) and Brandon Moss drove in three runs, including a two-run single in the four-run eighth.

Rookie winning pitcher Evan Scribner (2-0) left the mound in the sixth to a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 30,067. He allowed two hits and struck out two in three scoreless innings after replacing struggling starter A.J. Griffin.

Ryan Cook, pitching for a fifth consecutive game, gave up a double to Nelson Cruz before retiring the next three Texas hitters with strikeouts of David Murphy and Mike Napoli. Catcher Derek Norris pumped his right arm as the Coliseum fans jumped to their feet.

Norris then homered leading off the bottom of the eighth for his second RBI. It was his seventh homer and Oakland's majors-leading 112th since the All-Star break.

"Ever since Day 1 I've been here, it's been, the A's can't compete with the payroll, can't compete with this team or that team," Norris said. "We're better off if we're down. It just gives us the extra energy."

The A's join the NL West champion San Francisco Giants as division champions. The Bay Area is already buzzing about a possible Bay Bridge World Series like the 1989 championship swept by Oakland, one interrupted by an earthquake.

Hamilton's miscue while charging forward might haunt the to-be free agent if his Rangers don't get past their wild-card game.

"I just missed it, man," Hamilton said. "You guys have a hard time believing we can forget about it and move ahead. But that's what we get paid to do."

Murphy's two-run single highlighted a five-run third inning that put Texas in prime position.

In the fourth, Moss drew a leadoff walk and Josh Reddick followed with an RBI double. Josh Donaldson singled and Seth Smith's base hit made it 5-3 and chased Ryan Dempster with none out and runners on first and second.

Washington turned to the lefty Holland, a starter who was tagged for four runs in the first inning of the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Angels before working into the seventh.

He retired the first two batters before Crisp's double down the right-field line.

The only other teams to come back from at least 13 games down to win the division were the 1914 Boston Braves, the 1951 New York Giants, the '78 Yankees and the '95 Seattle Mariners.

Oakland accomplished this with an ever-changing roster managed by Melvin in his first full season as skipper. They lost third baseman Scott Sizemore to a knee injury on the first full day of spring training workouts, never promoted slugger Manny Ramirez from the minors before parting ways, and dealt with devastating injuries all year long.

Opening day starter Brandon McCarthy took a line drive to the head Sept. 5 that required surgery and ended his season, Brett Anderson missed most of the year coming off Tommy John surgery, and Dallas Braden never pitched because of shoulder problems. Starter Bartolo Colon received a 50-game suspension in August for a positive testosterone test.

Third baseman Brandon Inge needed shoulder surgery last month and prized Cuban rookie Yoenis Cespedes missed time with a pair of injuries in May and June.

And that's just the beginning for a team that traded away catcher Kurt Suzuki to the Nationals during the year after swapping three top pitchers during the offseason ? Trevor Cahill to Arizona, NL Cy Young Award favorite and 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez to Washington and All-Star closer Andrew Bailey to Boston.

"There hasn't been a lot of luck involved," said Beane, who received a celebratory pie in the face. "The one thing about baseball, when you play 161 games, you don't get lucky this late in the season. There have been a lot of adjustments on the fly."

NOTES: The A's, whose 14 walkoff victories lead baseball, won their seventh game this year after trailing by four or more runs. ... The A's won the season series 11-8, just the second time in seven seasons they've done so. ... The sellout crowd included 1,000 standing-room only tickets. ... Holland pitched in relief for the second time this year.

Low cost flying arrives in luxury loving Japan

NARITA, Japan (AP) ? Japan has a reputation for loving expensive things like overpriced real estate, gourmet melons and luxury brands. But the nation is finally discovering the joy of flying cheap, with the arrival this year of three low-cost carriers.

The takeoff of AirAsia Japan, Peach Aviation and Jetstar Japan could change lifestyles. No longer will air travel be mostly confined to business trips and fancy once-in-a-lifetime vacations to places such as Hawaii.

Flying is suddenly growing more casual, including for weekend dining, visits with friends, even day trips. Ticket prices are plunging by about half, to 16,000 yen ($200) trips to the southwestern resort island of Okinawa or a 5,000 yen ($60) hop to Seoul.

The airlines are not only out to woo Japanese away from regular leisure activities such as spending money at Disneyland or watching a movie. They are also out to convince the notoriously workaholic Japanese not to work so hard.

They may revitalize Japan's 3 trillion yen ($38 billion) aviation market ? already the world's third largest, comprising about 5.5 percent of global traffic and 11 percent of industry revenues ? that critics say is untapped for its tremendous potential.

Helping to drive the change is the expansion of two Tokyo airports, Haneda and Narita, which has opened up more landing slots for airlines.

Twenty-two-year-old graduate student Chie Kodama recently used Jetstar for an urban planning research trip to Okinawa, and was surprised at how the planes were "normal," like any other airline's.

"And it is so cheap you forgive any shortcomings," she said.

As with other low-cost carriers around the world, flyers get charged for meals and extra luggage. Efficiency is critical and so the airlines use online advertising and reservations, fit more seats into each jet, and take off quickly after landing.

Booking early is a must for the best deals, and refunds and schedule changes aren't allowed. The gates are typically at the farthest end of airports. Flights are sometimes delayed. The wait feels longer because LCC users have to check in extra early.

Masato Yamaguchi, 22, said his friends had to run like mad when their AirAsia flight back to Tokyo from Okinawa was delayed, and they barely had time to catch the last bus.

As he noted: What would be the point of having to pay hundreds of dollars for a cab home, if they had endured the cramped space of a low cost carrier to pinch pennies?

"There was no way to cross your legs," Yamaguchi grumbled. "You wouldn't want to use it if you're going someplace far away."

Still, the carriers are doing well so far.

During the nation's Obon holidays in August, domestic flights at Peach were 94 percent filled, those at AirAsia were at 91 percent and at Jetstar, 89 percent. The companies are hoping to do as well for the year-end and New Year's holidays.

"It's not that the meals on standard fares were ever free. The charge was just part of the ticket price," Kazuyuki Iwakata, president of AirAsia Japan, told The Associated Press. "With us, people pay only for what they need."

As a marketing ploy, AirAsia Japan, which started operations in August, offered tickets for just 5 yen (5 cents) to the first 10,000 people. They quickly sold out.

During the go-go "bubble years" of the late 1980s and early 1990s, Japanese were especially seen as finicky consumers who delighted in 3,000 yen ($30) cups of fancy coffee and snatched up 500,000 yen ($5,000) designer bags.

Such spending has lost some of its glamor as Japanese become less status-conscious, perhaps poorer and look for discounts. Such shifts in consumer tastes is underlined in the popularity, for instance, of Fast Retailing Co.'s no-nonsense Uniqlo clothing chain, which is also opening shops in the U.S.

Geoffrey Tudor, analyst with Japan Aviation Management Research, said low-cost carriers are introducing the fun of flying to young people and retirees. They are also popular with families who live apart to juggle work assignments and children's education needs ? a practice so widespread a special phrase has been coined to describe it, "tanshin funin."

Jetstar Japan Chief Executive Miyuki Suzuki said a tenth of those who use her carrier are first-time fliers.

"We aim to grow the piece of the pie," she told reporters recently. "People can travel more for less and have many more experiences."

Jetstar Japan is a third owned by Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd., and a third owned by Japan Airlines Co., which is making a soaring comeback, thanks to a 350 billion yen ($4.5 billion) government bailout from bankruptcy two years ago and generous tax breaks that continue for several years. Mitsubishi Corp. and Century Tokyo Leasing Corp. are its other shareholders with 16.7 percent each.

AirAsia Japan is 49 percent owned by AirAsia, a Malaysian low-cost carrier founded in 1993, whose motto is "Now everyone can fly," and 51 percent by All Nippon Airways Co., or ANA, JAL's rival.

ANA is also a 38.7 percent investor in Peach, a joint venture with Hong Kong investment group, First Eastern Aviation Holdings. Peach offers flights out of Kansai International Airport in Osaka, central Japan.

AirAsia Japan offers flights out of Narita, the Tokyo airport, to Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa in Japan, and plans to start them to Seoul and Pusan in South Korea later this year. Flights to the Philippines and Guam are in the works as well.

While expanding Haneda has given a boost to the airline travel market, officials say more needs to be done. Landing fees at Japanese airports are among the highest in the world, endangering Tokyo's role as an Asian hub.

Tony Tyler, director and chief executive of the International Air Transport Association, said all carriers need to bring costs down if they hope to survive, but was upbeat about Japanese LCCs.

"In many parts of the world, the low-fare sector has tapped into demand from new market sectors. So they have grown the market, rather than cannibalized it," he said.

Also sold on low-cost carriers was Hirotaka Yamamoto, 22, who goes to college in Tokyo but hails from the northernmost island of Hokkaido. He surprised his parents over the summer by going home, thanks to the 24,000 yen ($300) round-trip fare on Jetstar, less than half of what he paid in the past.

"They were surprised to see me and so happy," he said. "I hope the tickets keep getting even cheaper."

iPhone 5 will see Google Maps app by end of year: report

Google Maps could be coming back to the iPhone a lot sooner than any of us thought.?

By Matthew Shaer / September 26, 2012

Apple employees hang an iPhone 5 sign at a store in San Francisco last week. Google Maps may be making a return to the iPhone sooner than expected, according to a new report.

Reuters

The iPhone 5 was well-received by critics and consumers alike, with one major exception: Apple Maps, the in-house replacement for Google Maps, which had been a default app on the iPhone for years. Apple Maps, detractors argue, is a?"flop,"?a?"debacle,"?and?just plain?"ugly."?

One analyst summed up the problem thusly: "In the short term, Google has a better mapping application, and iPhone customers will suffer."

But maybe not for long. According to a new report in The New York Times, Google will release a new iOS 6 maps app, perhaps within the next couple of months, and almost certainly before the end of the year. The Times sources its article to "to people involved with the effort who declined to be named because of the nature of their work"; neither Apple nor Google has offered official comment. Still, this is one rumor that we buy.?

From the Times:

One reason that it will take Google some time to build the iPhone app: it expected the app with Google?s maps to remain on the iPhone for some time, based on the contract between the two companies, and was caught off guard when Apple decided to build a new application to replace the old one...?There are several complicating factors to Google?s development of the app. Google?s contract with Apple to keep the maps app on the iPhone had more time remaining, and Google did not know that Apple had changed its mind until Apple said publicly in June that it would replace the app with its new maps app.

In other words, this whole thing got sprung on Google, which is now playing catch-up. That makes sense. It also stands to reason, of course, that by the time Google gets together a new mapping app for the iPhone and iPad, Apple will have corrected some of the flaws in its in-house application, including the lack of transit directions and the plethora of glitches (check out this Tumblr for a compendium).?

Another thing to consider: Apple is going to have to approve any Google Maps app before it appears on any Apple product again.?John Paczkowski of All Things D says that talks between Google and Apple failed because of a spat over turn-by-turn directions ? and that Apple eventually decided to go with its own in-house product. Would the companies reach an agreement this time around??

Ask Eric Schmidt, the chair of Google. Speaking at an event in Tokyo this week, Schmidt said?Apple would "have to approve [Google Maps]. It?s their choice."?

Child obesity: Why do parents let their kids get fat ... - Health.am

? Children's Health ? ? Obesity ? Sep 25, 2012

The health risks for obese children may be even greater than previously estimated, new research suggests. So why do parents let their kids get fat?

The recent start of the new school year was greeted with reports of a dramatic rise in demand for extra-large uniforms for primary school pupils.

It came as no surprise to Carol. Her two nieces were wearing size 14 skirts by the age of 11, the average size worn by a grown woman in the UK.

Her son also struggled to find a uniform big enough at secondary school as his weight crept up to nearly 20 stone (127kg) in his teens.

"You do feel judged by other people when your child gets to that size, but the harshest critic is yourself,? says the mother-of-two from Birmingham.

?I constantly asked myself ?what am I doing wrong???

It?s a good question. Just over 33% of 11-year-olds are now overweight or obese and among four and five-year-olds it?s 22%, according to the most recent figures from the National Child Measurement Programme, which assesses the height and weight of primary children in England. The figures are similar in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

New research published today by the University of Oxford also suggests that obese children and adolescents have several risk factors for heart disease, including raised blood pressure and cholesterol, compared with normal weight children.

Obesity experts say parents are struggling with a multitude of problems when it comes to their child?s weight. They range from a lack of education about food, limited cooking skills and limited money to buy healthier food to longer working hours and marketing campaigns for junk food aimed at kids.

But the more sedentary lives children now lead is also creating huge problems. Last week a study suggested that up to 75% of junior school children preferred to stay at home than go to their nearby park.

Watching TV was one of the most popular activities, with 89% saying it was how they liked best to spend their time away from school, according to researchers Lightspeed. In July, scientists from University of Montreal claimed every extra hour of television that a toddler watches each week adds to their waist size by the time they turn 10.

So while the problems parents face might be increasing so is evidence about the dangers of obesity. So why do they let their children get so fat?

Katy?s son weighed over 23 stone (147kg) by the age of 15. She knew the reason - he ate too much and did too little exercise. She says she tried to help him but things only changed after he decided to help himself.

?A lot of his eating habits were out of my control,? says the mother-of-two from Buckinghamshire. ?He would eat too much when he was at school and then come home and eat whatever was around, even cook big meals for himself. He wouldn?t wait for me to get home and make dinner.

Iran Policy Committee: Removal of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) from U.S. Foreign Terrorist Organizations List

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On 21 September 2012, U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, informed the Congress of her intent to remove an Iranian dissident group, the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), from the Foreign Terrorist Organizations list. Upon publication in the Federal Register in about 7 days from her announcement, the delisting becomes official and all the consequences of sanctions embodied in the designation will also be lifted by different U.S. Government agencies. ?

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment in the Reagan and Bush administrations and member of the Advisory Board of the Iran Policy Committee, William A. Nitze, stated:

I concur with Secretary Clinton's announcement to delist the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) as a long-overdue recognition that as the largest dissident organization in the Iranian parliament in exile?the National Council of Resistance of Iran?the MEK did not meet the statutory criteria necessary for terror tagging under U.S. law.

The MEK only carried the terrorist label due to persistent lobbying by the Iranian regime and miscalculation by successive American presidents that concessions would appease Tehran's clerical rulers and diminish state-sponsored proxy violence.

Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney, (Ret), former Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force, stated:

Now that the terrorist tag has been removed from the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) by Secretary Clinton, collection of dissident information as lead intelligence can accelerate and complement that of western intelligence services to bolster sanctions against Iran. Origins of international sanctions against Tehran came from blockbuster intelligence revelations of the MEK and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the parliament in exile of the Iranian resistance.

Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely, (Ret), former Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army, Pacific, joined General McInerney in welcoming the announcement by Secretary Clinton and stated:

As the guns of war with Iran are becoming louder for a post-American 2012 presidential elections conflict scenario, research of the Iran Policy Committee (IPC) suggests how important it is for the Washington to refrain from hamstringing the MEK with a terrorist designation. By delisting the organization, it can increase its role in facilitating political change in Iran.

Delisting the MEK should jumpstart intelligence revelations at a critical time when such information can be useful in demonstrating Tehran's propensity to cheat on its obligations to the United Nations and potential targeting of Iranian nuclear sites, if military force has to be used as an option of last resort.

Captain Charles "Chuck" Nash, U.S. Navy (Ret), welcomed the Clinton announcement to remove the terrorist label on the MEK. Nash stated:

Like other former military officers, I am very concerned about the exposure of unarmed civilian members of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) who suffer at the mercy of their jailers in Baghdad. Because of the pushback by Tehran against the removal of the MEK terrorist designation, its members in Iraq will be subject to recrimination. The Iranian press abounds with statements against delisting, perhaps prelude for Tehran to order Baghdad to launch a third assault on the MEK members like those in 2009 and 2011.

Founder and President of Global Initiative for Democracy (GID) and former Freedom House Executive Director, Bruce McColm, said:

With the delisting of MEK, which was the most distinct yardstick for the policy of appeasing Iran, the focus must now shift to assisting the Iranian people as they endeavor to bring down their oppressive rulers. The MEK can certainly play the role of the catalyst in utilizing its enormous political and organizational wherewithal to this end.

Professor Raymond Tanter, President of the IPC and former member of the National Security Council staff in the Reagan-Bush administration, said:

It is encouraging that commitments made by the United State were reiterated on 29 August 2012, when Victoria Nuland, State Department?Spokesperson, said the Department urges the Government of Iraq to continue steps to address humanitarian concerns raised at Camp Liberty by its residents (now some 3,000 members of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq).

Specifically, Nuland said:

"The United States ... reiterates its commitment to work towards resolution of humanitarian issues at ... [Liberty], including sustainable means for the continued supply of water and electricity. The United States also reiterates its commitment to support the safety and security of the residents throughout the process of their relocation outside of Iraq."

"The United States will have to monitor implementation of such commitments," stated Tanter. ?

Dr. Daniel Pipes, President of the?Middle East Forum, has published over a dozen articles and given several interviews in multiple languages about the MEK, including on Iranian expatriate communities whose annual rallies in Paris are events attended by tens of thousands of supporters of the MEK. Concerning the announcement by Secretary Clinton to remove the MEK designation, Dr. Pipes stated, "A special vote of thanks to all those analysts, led by the indefatigable Raymond Tanter, who established that the MEK is not?terrorist and that relations with it serve the national interests of the?United States."

?

Baltimore remains a bit of the schizophrenic team this season since it has large wins over teams like the Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco Bay Area 49ers, but has lost towards the type of the The town of the city of jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Seahawks.

Understanding that, the Browns won?t always be described as a walk-in-the-park. After coming a late lead in the Bengals the other day, the Browns? already-slim playoff hopes are really virtually non-existent. What?s at risk?

Which team will win farmville?

Baltimore Ravens Brown Colours Submit Election election to find out results

For your Browns farmville is principally about pride and looking to create money for hard times, along with the Ravens farmville is large for playoff positioning. Once the season ended today, Baltimore would win the AFC North, there is however still around the month remaining, meaning the Ravens can?t afford to think about anybody lightly.

Each time a winnable game pops up, the Ravens have to take advantage. That?s something they haven?t always transported this out season while using Jaguars and Seahawks being prime good good examples. Baltimore must prove it?s equally in a position to beating inferior rivals since it is beating teams on one level. A convincing conquer Cleveland on the road would accomplish just that.

Ravens Injuries Report

Questionable: RB Ryan Mahaffey (concussion), RB Anthony Allen (leg), DL Arthur Manley (mind), LB Ray Lewis (ft), LB Dannell Ellerbe (leg), DB Chris Carr (back)

Browns Injuries Report

Questionable: RB Montario Hardesty (calf), RB Owen Marecic (mind), DL Jayme Mitchell (ankle), DL Kaluka Maiava (knee), LB Quinton Warrior warrior spears (hamstring), DB T.J. Ward (ft, finger)

Probable: QB Colt McCoy (elbow)

Fantasy Start Them, Sit Them and Sleeper

Start: RB Ray Grain (BAL)

Ravens running back Ray Grain is not his explosive self within the last a few days, but he?s a good chance revisit form in the Browns in addition to their 29th-ranked run defense. Grain only one 100-yard game within the last six days, but he?s worthy of might more against Cleveland.

Sit: RB Peyton Hillis (CLE)

After missing a few days getting a nagging hamstring injuries, Browns running back and Madden 12 cover boy Peyton Hillis returned to action the other day in the Cincinnati Bengals. Hillis exercised perfectly in the Bengals? stout defense, acquiring 65 yards on 19 carries. I wouldn?t expect anything a lot better than that against Baltimore?s defense now.

Sleeper: WR Greg Little (CLE)

Therefore the Ravens hold the league?s fifth-ranked pass defense, but that doesn?t imply Browns rookie receiver Greg Little is important-sit candidate. He?s really heated lately having a minimum of five grabs in three consecutive games, so when Cleveland is playing from behind, Little will most likely be a common target of quarterback Colt McCoy.

What they?re Saying

Despite the fact that the Baltimore Ravens presently sit in to start with inside the AFC North by getting an 8-3 record, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron has frequently been belittled. The offense remains an enigma of sorts and will be a large cause of all the team?s three deficits. Regardless of public perception, Ravens mind coach John Harbaugh thinks Cameron is doing a fantastic job this season, according to Edward Lee in the Baltimore Sun.

Cam is doing an admirable job with leading that side from this. We?ve required to kind of search for ? week to week ? methods to find away to complete the most effective we could to win football games. Sometimes we?ve done a lot better than in some cases ? a lot of us. Making this where we?re at.

Ravens Player To Check Out: RB Ray Grain

The Ravens offense remains up minimizing this season just like a unit and of that?s due to the casual play of running back Ray Grain. While Grain has shown the capability to think about over a game title title, he?s also completely disappeared on several occasion. That?s a thing that simply can?t happen on Sunday.

Cleveland has one of the league?s worst run protection, meaning a massive game will there be to consider for Grain. I?m unsure quarterback Joe Flacco might be reliable in large moments yet, therefore it is absolutely imperative that Grain can get going right before this years national football league 2010 nfl playoffs. This might help because the jumping-off reason behind a late-season tear.

Browns Player To Check Out: QB Colt McCoy

What will be the results of farmville in the spread?

Ravens win and canopy Ravens win, but don?t cover Browns win outright Push Submit Election election to find out results

Ravens vs. Browns

Ravens vs. Browns

Ravens vs. Browns : Browns quarterback Colt McCoy is definately not probably the most sexy quarterback option inside the Nfl, however when very little else he?s consistent. He isn?t normally prone to trigger for just about any huge game, but he?s doing sufficient to help the Browns postpone. He will have to simply do that on Sunday if Cleveland may have any chance to complete the upset.

McCoy likely won?t be capable of depend round the running game due to Baltimore?s stout run defense, so it will be around him. They key in the Ravens defense is keeping drives and keeping them round the area. If McCoy can execute rapid-passing game perfectly, your Browns could surprise the Ravens.

Key Game: WR Anquan Boldin versus. DB Joe Haden

Some casual experts don?t realize, the Browns hold the top-ranked pass defense inside the Nfl. Probably the finest reason behind your is cornerback Joe Haden. It?s not taken extended for Haden to develop right into a top-notch corner which he perfectly may be approaching the echelon in the New You?ll be able to Jets? Darrelle Revis.

Making Baltimore?s offense one-dimensional may help much the Browns in this particular game, and Haden may be just the guy to make it happen. The Ravens? top wide receiver is clearly Anquan Boldin, so Haden will most likely be shadowing him for most Sunday?s game. If Haden locks Boldin lower like he?s doing other products, the Baltimore offense have a difficult time.

Round the Hot Chair: RB Peyton Hillis

Along with his contract in the conclusion of the year, Browns running back Peyton Hillis is playing for just about any body body fat new deal, possibly with Cleveland. Hillis? proneness to injuries and perceived bad attitude might possibly not have endeared him for the organization, though, so he will need to play well lower the stretch to have the ability to earn that contract.

It won?t be simple in the Ravens defense, however when Hillis can stick out on Sunday, it may be enough for your Browns to consider re-signing him. Probably the leading office already features its own mind composed one way or any other, but Hillis is essentially who audition to remain a newbie within the league.
