Egypt's Brotherhood criticizes call for boycott

CAIRO (AP) ? A leading member of Egypt's most powerful Islamist party is criticizing calls by the opposition for a boycott of upcoming parliamentary elections.

The deputy head of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Essam el-Erian, wrote on his Facebook page Saturday that "running away from a popular test only means that some want to assume executive authority without a democratic mandate."

His comments come after opposition figure Mohammed ElBaradei called for a boycott of elections, saying he will not be part of a "sham democracy."

The Egyptian president's Brotherhood has emerged as the country's most powerful political group while liberal, secular parties have trailed behind.

(AP) ? Cuban President Raul Castro has unexpectedly raised the possibility of leaving his post, saying Friday that he is old and has a right to retire. But he did not say when he might do so or if such a move was imminent.

The Cuban leader is scheduled to be named by parliament to a new five-year term on Sunday, and Castro urged reporters to listen to his speech that day.

"I am going to resign," Castro said at a joint appearance with visiting Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

"I am going to be 82 years old," Castro added, a broad smile on his face. "I have the right to retire, don't you think?"

When reporters continued to shout questions about his plans for the next five years, Castro replied: "Why are you so incredulous?"

He said to listen carefully on Sunday.

"It will be an interesting speech," he said. "Pay attention."

Castro's tone was light and his comments came in informal remarks at a mausoleum dedicated to soldiers from the former Soviet Union who have died around the world.

The Cuban leader has spoken before of his desire to implement a two-term limit for all Cuban government positions, including the presidency. He has also alluded to the limited time he has left to overhaul the island's weak Marxist economy.

That has led many to speculate that this upcoming term would be his last, though term limits have never been codified into Cuban law.

Most Havana residents had not heard about Castro's comments, which had not been reported on Cuban television although footage from his appearance with Medvedev was shown. Many reacted with skepticism.

"Who would they put in?" asked Marta Alvarez, a 45-year-old housewife walking through Old Havana. "But I don't think it would be now. It would happen in five years."

Castro will be 86 when his next term ends in 2018. Up until now, all eyes had been on who would emerge as Castro's first and second vice presidents during Sunday's proceedings. The positions are currently occupied by two loyal octogenarians who fought in the 1959 revolution.

Putting someone younger in one of those roles would be the first sign that Castro was settling on a potential next-generation successor, something he and his brother Fidel have never done, even as many comrades have succumbed to old age.

As far back as December 2010, Castro began to reflect on his responsibility, and that of his aging generation, to right Cuba's economy, noting that the actuarial tables leave them few remaining years.

"The time we have left is short, the task is enormous," he told lawmakers in his year-end speech that year. "I think we have an obligation ... to set (the country) on the right course."

When Raul Castro does leave the political stage, it would end more than a half century of unbroken rule by the two brothers, who came to power in 1959 at the head of a revolution against U.S.-backed strongman Fulgencio Batista.

Armando Gutierrez, a 78-year-old Cuban-American lawyer in Florida and veteran of the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, said he hoped Castro wasn't joking about retiring, but doubted that whoever follows would bring true political change.

"Can you imagine 54 years?" Gutierrez said. "Not even the Roman emperors lasted that long."

Relations with the United States have been sour since shortly after the revolution. One of the key provisions of the 51-year U.S. economic embargo on Cuba stipulates that it cannot be lifted while either of the Castros is in power.

Castro has implemented a series of economic and social reforms since taking over from his ailing brother in 2006, but the island is still ruled by one party. Fidel Castro is 86 and retired, and has seemed increasingly frail in recent appearances.

The elder Castro was also visited by Medvedev, Cuban state-run media reported.

Falling lamb prices make UK, Irish sheep farmers fear for future

LONDON (Reuters) - Sheep farmers in Britain and Ireland fear for their future as oversupply of lamb in Europe drags farm-gate prices to three-year lows while production costs soar, giving efficient New Zealand exporters a vital edge.

Most British sheep farmers have been selling at a loss since November because an influx of cheap imports coincided with the delayed sales of home-grown lambs that had been held up by wet weather causing poor feeding conditions.

Meanwhile, much of the European Union, the biggest market for British lamb, is in recession.

Lamb prices at British farms were down 24 percent year-on-year in early February while Ireland recorded a 20 percent drop.

Britain and Ireland are the EU's top lamb producers and major exporters alongside world leaders New Zealand and Australia.

But farmers and analysts say falling incomes could push hundreds to leave the business and thousands more to reduce their flocks, making the animal that shapes much of the current landscape of the islands, through its grazing, a rarer sight.

"If this trend continues, and producers are forced to sell lambs at less than the cost of production, then ultimately they will look at alternative ways of making a living," said Charles Sercombe, a sheep breeder in central England in charge of livestock issues for Britain's National Farmers Union (NFU).

The drop in farm gate prices - to 3.40 pounds per kg ($2.35 per lb)- has yet to show on British supermarket shelves, where lamb fetches between 7 and 15 pounds a kg. According to the NFU, while December wholesale prices for legs of lamb slid 17 percent from a year ago, retail prices edged down only 2 percent.

"Farmers' costs are rising, but retailers' costs are too," said Richard Dodd, spokesman for the British Retail Consortium, adding that the country's supermarkets regularly ran promotions on lamb but that higher costs for processing, transport and running stores needed to be reflected in headline shop prices.

Input costs for British and Irish sheep farmers have increased by around 30 percent in the past five years, with feed, fuel and fertilisers biting particularly hard.

"Those are the three things that have really put the guys under pressure here with the reduction in (lamb) price," said Gabriel Gilmartin, president of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association.

The situation for producers could get worse as New Zealand has leeway in its export quotas to further increase shipments to the EU, where appetite for lamb remains solid but incomes are squeezed.

FROM SHORTAGE TO OVERSUPPLY

Despite a strengthening currency, export-driven New Zealand farmers can produce lamb more cheaply than those in Britain and Ireland, largely through economies of scale.

In Ireland a large farm might have 500 to 600 sheep, compared with 3,000 to 5,000 in New Zealand, Gilmartin said.

"There is too much fragmentation of land in Ireland and the holdings are too small," he said.

Britain has been importing lamb from the Southern Hemisphere for over a century to guarantee supply at any season, with peak shipments traditionally arriving in the first half of the year, when domestic supply is lowest.

But the heavy rain of 2012 delayed Britain's peak of production by two months because lambs do not thrive on soaked grass, as they get less nutrients and are prone to diseases.

When these lambs came to market late last year, New Zealand imports had increased by over 30 percent from the previous year, according to data shared by trade body the English Beef and Lamb Executive (Eblex).

This increase came after extremely tight global supplies in 2011 sent prices to record highs and prompted a jump in output.

But consumer expenditure on lamb in Europe has since remained roughly static and the higher volumes sold fetched lower prices per kg, said Eblex senior analyst Paul Heyhoe.

Mike Petersen, chairman of New Zealand's trade body for beef and lamb, said average lamb prices were expected to drop by a quarter in the country this year.

"There is no doubt that with a soft market, and a number of carryover UK lambs from the wet winter, pricing has been softer than all of us would like," he said.

The agriculture ministry forecast last month that average incomes for English farms with grazing livestock would fall by up to 52 percent in 2012/13 to between 14,000 and 18,000 pounds.

The ministry cited lower sheep values and higher feed costs.

Phil Stocker, chief executive of Britain's National Sheep Association, warned that if farm gate prices did not pick up within six months, 2 to 3 percent of the country's 65,000 sheep farmers could decide to leave the business entirely, while a majority may shift activity towards crops, cattle or dairy.

"We could see the confidence that's built up in the last two or three years come to a halt, which would be a real shame, especially when global signals are still fairly strong and when, for environment and landscape purposes, people are saying we need grazing animals," he said. Hacker Challenge Winner: Photograph Your Clothing Combinations

Hacker Challenge Winner: Photograph Your Clothing CombinationsIn last week's Hacker Challenge, we asked you to share your best clothing hack. We received some great entries, but the winning hack shows us a way to remember great color combinations for your clothes.

Check out the description of the winning entry below and read about some of our other favorite entries.

Hacker Challenge Winner: Photograph Your Clothing Combinations

Winner: Photograph Your Clothing Combinations

For years, Joel played it safe when it came to choosing color combinations for his clothing (red shirt, black tie, black pants, for example). As a result, he really had only six or seven different outfits for work. When he started dating his wife, that changed. She laid out all the different combinations Joel's clothes could handle and took pictures. She printed them and handed Joel a stack of more than fifty outfits that he could put together. The code at the bottom of the photos indicates the pants that go with the pictured shirt and tie (Tan, Medium Brown, Chocolate, in this case). Now when Joel receives compliments on his clothes, he's proud to say "Thanks! My wife dressed me."

Honorable Mentions

We got a lot of great entries and we'd be remiss if we didn't share some of our favorites. Here are some of the entries that really impressed us.

Create a Velcro Epaulet to Secure Your Camera Strap

Hacker Challenge Winner: Photograph Your Clothing CombinationsAs a press photographer, CareyB frequently carries around a heavy camera. The trouble was that CareyB and most of his colleagues used narrow straps because the wider ones tend to chafe your neck and can't be put under a collar. Changing straps all the time was annoying, so CareyB's solution was sew Velcro straps onto the shoulders of his vest and jacket to create epaulets. He secured both parts of the Velcro, running a single line of stitching parallel to the shoulder seam. The Velcro provided decent extra padding, regardless of which strap he used. He could also peel back the top layer of Velcro and put the strap between the two layers, creating secure grip on the strap.

Use Leg Warmers for Your Arms

Hacker Challenge Winner: Photograph Your Clothing CombinationsVanessa was tired of her arms getting cold on bike trips to and from campus, but she didn't want to wear a coat that she'd then have to lug around all day. Enter the leg warmer. They're cheap and come in all kinds of styles. They keep Vanessa's arms warm and they are light enough to just stuff in her bag. She can also pull them down over her hands to double as gloves. In fact, she has ended up preferring them to gloves because she can just push them up instead of removing them when it's time to wash her hands or eat. Also, the elastic makes them useful for tucking away money, cards, and other small objects.

Wash And Store Your Shirts Inside-Out

Hacker Challenge Winner: Photograph Your Clothing CombinationsLHanon leaves his shirts inside out after taking them off. He washes them that way so that he doesn't have to worry about lint collecting during the laundry cycle?the lint will only be on the inside of the shirt. LHanon also folds or hangs up the shirt while still inside out, then just flips it on neck first when it's time to wear it. This technique prevents him from getting deodorant marks on the outside of the shirt.

The 51st state: South Florida

It is encouraging to see the seven contiguous southern counties of the state of Florida meeting in symposiums to better coordinate regional efforts as we plan for the next half century. Unfortunately, they will fall short in every category until all of us in this region realize what is really required to maximize our region?s potential.

These seven southeast counties must secede from the state of Florida and petition the Congress in Washington to accept us as the 51st state: The state of South Florida.

The precedent was set by the 48 contiguous counties in the western part of Virginia when they petitioned Congress for statehood in 1863, and their request was granted even though the state of Virginia resisted.

As our own state, we could keep the hundreds of millions of dollars of sales tax revenues that currently fund the other 60 counties. We could elect a legislature that would fund our schools at the maximum that for the past 40 years Tallahassee has funded at 47th in the nation per student and appears to be content to continue.

As our own state, we could allow Genting to invest $2 billion in the Port of Miami and use the gaming tax revenue to fund the infrastructure personnel (teachers, police officers, and fire men and women), who are presently leaving the state of Florida for similar better paying positions elsewhere. The Disney people and their politicians in the Orlando area and the Bible belt Jacksonville to Pensacola groups will never let us maximize our tourist industry.

As our own state, we could best develop and coordinate our mass transportation systems and highway network. Our university system would be the beneficiary of regional, rather than the state of Florida, doling of funds to maximize our current and future capabilities.

With the expansion of the Panama Canal and the improving commercial climate with Latin American countries, we must prepare our ports along our entire coast to maximize our opportunities for future growth and trade.

Unfortunately, we, in this region, are burdened by the shackles of the 60 counties to our north. Until we unburden ourselves, all the efforts of our regional planners can be minimally effective, at best.

Billionaires Secretly Fund Vast Climate Denial Network

Here's the problem. There have been thousands of societies that at one point had the sort of "Liberty and Freedom" that you are talking about, where there was little or no government to "nanny" people. Do you know what happened to all of those societies? Power centralized, and freedom went away.

The thing that historically has made our country great is specifically the government. We fill the power vacuum with a democratically elected government so that some rich cabal of people can't take power and use it so their "freedom" is maximized and yours is minimized. The problem is obviously that if you let said cabals get enough influence, with mass media and the internet being what they are, they gain a new route to that tyranny anyway: buy enough public opinion and you can directly manipulate a democracy.

So every single person in this country should give much more than a rat's ass when stories like this come up, because they directly relate to people trying to break the system that has protected your liberty and freedom for hundreds of years. And this isn't really about parties. I think that the conservative movement in this country has some properties that make this sort of action happen more frequently from their direction, but we should be vigilant against similar manipulation from anybody.

I agree that Liberty and Freedom are what makes this country great. But right now, you are defending the Koch brothers' freedom to try to steal your freedom from you.

150 Boise icons to celebrate the city's sesquicentennial: Ahavath Beth Israel Synagogue

Did you know? The synagogue is the oldest in continuous use west of the Rockies. It weighs 60 tons. The task of moving it took six hours.

Idaho Statesman file

Pioneers built the Moorish-style synagogue in 1895. Its builders included Moses Alexander. He became the mayor of Boise and the governor of Idaho, the first Jewish governor in the U.S.

The synagogue moved from its original site at 11th and State streets to the Boise Bench in a dramatic, middle-of-the-night trip in 2003.

In the early 1900s, the synagogue, then known as Beth Israel, served as a haven for disenfranchised groups. Congregation member Sherrill Livingston said that when the first Latter-day Saints arrived in Boise, only the Jewish community opened its doors to them. Mormons used the synagogue for prayer.

Today's Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel is the result of two synagogues merging. After World War II, Jews in the military arrived at Gowen Field and Mountain Home Air Force Base. They built Ahavath Israel, a more conservative synagogue, at 27th and Bannock.

The congregations came together in 1986.

Angry Birds Trilogy flutters to Wii Wii U in celebration of one million sold

The Angry Birds and the pigs they hate so are already quite popular on mobile devices, but it turns out that the collected escapades for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo 3DS in Angry Birds Trilogy also did quite well, pushing past one million units since September 2012. Its console success is apparently enough for its Finnish progenitor, Rovio, to release the game for both Nintendo's original Wii and the more recent Wii U at some point in 2013. The trilogy collects the first Angry Birds game with Seasons and Rio for "700+ levels." It stands to reason that the Wii U version will take advantage of the system's tablet-esque GamePad, but we'll have to wait on Rovio for more info as the year goes on.

Home Depot betting on home improvement growth - NBC12.com ...

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Home Depot plans to hire 80,000 seasonal workers nationwide this year. That's ten thousand more than last year. The company is confident more homeowners will invest in home improvement this year. Is it a sign of an improving economy?

You name it, Linda Mills and her family are re-doing it in the house they just bought.

"We're painting the entire house, inside and out, I'm the painter," Linda showed us.

Electrical work, insulation, patching plaster, "kitchen renovation and retiling and all kinds of stuff," she added. "It's a good thing he's very handy."

They're investing thousands in this fixer-upper, even though the economy is still far from fixed up.

"I'm certainly a lot more comfortable with the economy than I was a few years ago," said Linda.

The Home Depot is betting on seeing more families like the Mills come through its doors this year.

"I would say we're betting pretty big that the season is going to be a lot bigger this year than it was last year," said local Home Depot store manager T. J. Harris.

Forbes Magazine is, too, estimating the demand for home improvement products will rise 2% to 3% over the next few years, due to a rise in construction permits and new home sales.

We asked Harris what makes a great Home Depot candidate.

"The better the availability, the more openings we have. Especially weekend coverage is what we really look for. And then nights and evenings," he told us.

Harris says they're looking for workers with garden and home improvement knowledge and great customer service. The jobs are part-time and temporary, but he says they often keep their best associates.

"We have a lot of people who start as a part time temp. We keep them on and they get promoted and they move on with the company," Harris added.

Home Depot will need them if more families like the Mills decide this is the year that home investment makes a comeback.

"We saw some (houses) that weren't going to require so much work, but after we saw this house, we wanted this house," said Linda.

To apply for a job at Home Depot, simply go to their website careers.homedepot.com. The website also has a skills navigator that helps veterans match their skills with Home Depot jobs.

TMI Tirade ? Technical Writing Tips for the Oil Patch

When writing big reports, you just don?t need to include every single piece of data you have. There is such a thing as Too Much Information = TMI.

For example, when writing a field development plan, the readers want to know what the plans are to develop the field. You may have done a year?s worth of geological study, with core descriptions, sedimentological reconstructions, and examinations of the fossils and burrows left behind by prehistoric itty-bitty critters with Latin names (in italics).

But you simply do not have to include all 109 pages of geology in the field development plan!

For one thing, nobody is going to have time to read 109 pages of geology. Not even fellow geologists.

And for another thing, there are no plans for the field geology. Trust me, the geology is not going to change during the next 25 years of the field life, and even if it did, it would be totally unplanned. Mother Nature is going to do what Mother Nature is going to do, and it won?t change the current plans for the field in any way, shape or form.

So why do you have to put 109 pages of geology in the main document? Surely a 10-page summary describing the sort of rock one might encounter at the different depths will suffice, putting the other 99 pages as a separate appendix document.

Already, Microsoft Word is balking, choking on the 124 megabytes of pictures, sending me ?not enough memory? error messages ? and I haven?t even gotten into the number of wells they plan to drill and whatever facilities and money they will need to flange up those plans.

I think I?m going to have to do some serious chopping if I?m going to be able to fit the actual field development plans into a document that?s of a manageable size.

Nintendo's Wii U gets first freetoplay game as TANK! TANK! TANK! gets divided on eShop

Namco's TANK! TANK! TANK! may have a great title, but it looks like its sales trajectory wasn't too far off from its name. The bizarre Wii U tank battle game is going free-to-play as of this week's eShop update -- at least in Europe -- dividing the game into three pieces based on game modes, each costing £1.59 (€1.99). Should you choose to not pay Namco's light toll, you can play each of the game's modes for free three times per day -- that toll raises to £7.99 (€9.99) apiece after February 28th, so you may want to act quickly. The new pricing and division of the game goes into effect this Thursday, when the EU's Wii U eShop updates.

Former Mesquite High School teacher, assistant ... - Crime Blog

Andrew Lott

A former teacher and assistant football coach at Mesquite High School faces up to 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge for having sex with a 17-year-old student in 2011.

A Dallas County jury is hearing testimony today before deciding on a punishment for Andrew Scott Lott, 34. He was arrested in January 2012 on a second-degree felony charge of improper relationship between an educator and student.

The victim in the case was a 17-year-old senior at the time the relationship began. She testified this morning that she initiated the relationship when she sent Lott an email in 2011.

She wrote to him that she ?had the hots for him? and he responded ?If you only knew,? she said.

The relationship quickly progressed and the woman eventually had sex with her teacher at his home, she said.

The woman is now a student at an area college. She testified that she continued to have a sexual relationship with Lott as recently as last week.

Things changed in the past 24 hours, she said. Lott told her in a phone conversation yesterday that she didn?t have to come testify in court if she didn?t want to and that she could call the Dallas County District Attorney?s office and have them halt the court proceedings, she said.

?I felt like at that point that I was being used,? she said.

The woman said it became clear to her that Lott had carried on a relationship with her in order to try to get her to help his criminal case.

Prosecutor Shequitta Kelly asked the woman to talk about something else that led her to cut off her relationship with Lott this week.

The woman said she met another former student of Lott who had had a relationship with him.

?Our complexion was the same and our hair color was the same and we were built the same,? she said. ?It made me feel like a preference. It did not make me feel like I was special.?

Large scale production of Edge-Functionalized Graphene Nanoplatelets (EFGnPs)

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Researchers from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea have pioneered a simple, but efficient and eco-friendly way to produce Edge-selectively functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (EFGnPs) by dry ball milling graphite in the presence of various gases.

The electrocatalytic activity of heteroatom-doped carbon-based nanomaterials has become a growing interest in the past few years due to their potential applications for fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Several approaches currently exist for the doping of heteroatoms into graphitic structure, but these suffer from high manufacturing costs and technical difficulties.

Researchers at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) have come up with a simple, but efficient and eco-friendly alternative which sees the production of edge-selectively functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (EFGnPs) via a dry ball milling graphite in the presence of various gases. The dry ball mill is effectively a type of grinder, traditionally use to grind ores, chemicals and other raw materials into fine powder. It can also be used on a atomic level, as is the case when producing EFGnPs.

Due to the versatility of mechanochemical reactions driven by ball milling, various functional groups could be introduced to the broken edges of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) in the presence of appropriate chemical vapors, liquids, or solids in the ball-mill crusher.

The mechanism of edge-selective functionalization in the ball-milling process involves the reaction between reactive carbon species generated by a mechanochemical cleavage of graphitic C-C bonds and gases in a sealed ball-mill crusher. The dormant active carbon species, which remain unreactive in the crusher, could be terminated by subsequent exposure to air moisture. As a result, some oxygenated groups, such as hydroxyl (-OH) and carboxylic acid (-COOH), can be introduced at the broken edges of the preformed EFGnPs with minimal basal plane distortion.

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to demonstrate the mechanochemical cracking of a large grain sized piece of graphite into a small grain size of EFGnPs. Due to the reaction between the newly formed active carbon species at the broken edges of the GnPs and corresponding gases, the ball milling and subsequent workup procedures were found to increase the weight of all the resultant EFGnPs with respect to the graphite starting material. These results indicated that the mechanochemical functionalization of graphite was efficient. The resultant EFGnPs are active enough for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells, and hence they will make expensive platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts to take a back seat.

Jong-Beom Baek, professor and director of the Interdisciplinary School of Green Energy/Low-Dimensional Carbon Materials Center at UNIST commented: "We have developed a simple, but versatile ball-milling process to efficiently exfoliate the pristine graphite directly into EFGnPs. Various microscopic and spectroscopic measurements were performed to confirm the reaction mechanisms for the edge functionalization of graphite by ball milling in the presence of corresponding gases and their superior slectrocatalytic activities of the ORR," said Prof. Baek.

This research was funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Minister Lee Ju-Ho) through the National Research Foundation of Korea (President Seung Jong Lee) and published in Journal of the American Chemical Society.
