The iPhone 5 was well-received by critics and consumers alike, with one major exception: Apple Maps, the in-house replacement for Google Maps, which had been a default app on the iPhone for years. Apple Maps, detractors argue, is a?"flop,"?a?"debacle,"?and?just plain?"ugly."?

One analyst summed up the problem thusly: "In the short term, Google has a better mapping application, and iPhone customers will suffer."

But maybe not for long. According to a new report in The New York Times, Google will release a new iOS 6 maps app, perhaps within the next couple of months, and almost certainly before the end of the year. The Times sources its article to "to people involved with the effort who declined to be named because of the nature of their work"; neither Apple nor Google has offered official comment. Still, this is one rumor that we buy.?

From the Times:

One reason that it will take Google some time to build the iPhone app: it expected the app with Google?s maps to remain on the iPhone for some time, based on the contract between the two companies, and was caught off guard when Apple decided to build a new application to replace the old one...?There are several complicating factors to Google?s development of the app. Google?s contract with Apple to keep the maps app on the iPhone had more time remaining, and Google did not know that Apple had changed its mind until Apple said publicly in June that it would replace the app with its new maps app.

In other words, this whole thing got sprung on Google, which is now playing catch-up. That makes sense. It also stands to reason, of course, that by the time Google gets together a new mapping app for the iPhone and iPad, Apple will have corrected some of the flaws in its in-house application, including the lack of transit directions and the plethora of glitches (check out this Tumblr for a compendium).?

Another thing to consider: Apple is going to have to approve any Google Maps app before it appears on any Apple product again.?John Paczkowski of All Things D says that talks between Google and Apple failed because of a spat over turn-by-turn directions ? and that Apple eventually decided to go with its own in-house product. Would the companies reach an agreement this time around??

Ask Eric Schmidt, the chair of Google. Speaking at an event in Tokyo this week, Schmidt said?Apple would "have to approve [Google Maps]. It?s their choice."?

The health risks for obese children may be even greater than previously estimated, new research suggests. So why do parents let their kids get fat?

The recent start of the new school year was greeted with reports of a dramatic rise in demand for extra-large uniforms for primary school pupils.

It came as no surprise to Carol. Her two nieces were wearing size 14 skirts by the age of 11, the average size worn by a grown woman in the UK.

Her son also struggled to find a uniform big enough at secondary school as his weight crept up to nearly 20 stone (127kg) in his teens.

"You do feel judged by other people when your child gets to that size, but the harshest critic is yourself,? says the mother-of-two from Birmingham.

?I constantly asked myself ?what am I doing wrong???

It?s a good question. Just over 33% of 11-year-olds are now overweight or obese and among four and five-year-olds it?s 22%, according to the most recent figures from the National Child Measurement Programme, which assesses the height and weight of primary children in England. The figures are similar in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

New research published today by the University of Oxford also suggests that obese children and adolescents have several risk factors for heart disease, including raised blood pressure and cholesterol, compared with normal weight children.

Obesity experts say parents are struggling with a multitude of problems when it comes to their child?s weight. They range from a lack of education about food, limited cooking skills and limited money to buy healthier food to longer working hours and marketing campaigns for junk food aimed at kids.

But the more sedentary lives children now lead is also creating huge problems. Last week a study suggested that up to 75% of junior school children preferred to stay at home than go to their nearby park.

Watching TV was one of the most popular activities, with 89% saying it was how they liked best to spend their time away from school, according to researchers Lightspeed. In July, scientists from University of Montreal claimed every extra hour of television that a toddler watches each week adds to their waist size by the time they turn 10.

So while the problems parents face might be increasing so is evidence about the dangers of obesity. So why do they let their children get so fat?

Katy?s son weighed over 23 stone (147kg) by the age of 15. She knew the reason - he ate too much and did too little exercise. She says she tried to help him but things only changed after he decided to help himself.

?A lot of his eating habits were out of my control,? says the mother-of-two from Buckinghamshire. ?He would eat too much when he was at school and then come home and eat whatever was around, even cook big meals for himself. He wouldn?t wait for me to get home and make dinner.

Iran Policy Committee: Removal of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) from U.S. Foreign Terrorist Organizations List

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On 21 September 2012, U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, informed the Congress of her intent to remove an Iranian dissident group, the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), from the Foreign Terrorist Organizations list. Upon publication in the Federal Register in about 7 days from her announcement, the delisting becomes official and all the consequences of sanctions embodied in the designation will also be lifted by different U.S. Government agencies. ?

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment in the Reagan and Bush administrations and member of the Advisory Board of the Iran Policy Committee, William A. Nitze, stated:

I concur with Secretary Clinton's announcement to delist the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) as a long-overdue recognition that as the largest dissident organization in the Iranian parliament in exile?the National Council of Resistance of Iran?the MEK did not meet the statutory criteria necessary for terror tagging under U.S. law.

The MEK only carried the terrorist label due to persistent lobbying by the Iranian regime and miscalculation by successive American presidents that concessions would appease Tehran's clerical rulers and diminish state-sponsored proxy violence.

Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney, (Ret), former Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force, stated:

Now that the terrorist tag has been removed from the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) by Secretary Clinton, collection of dissident information as lead intelligence can accelerate and complement that of western intelligence services to bolster sanctions against Iran. Origins of international sanctions against Tehran came from blockbuster intelligence revelations of the MEK and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the parliament in exile of the Iranian resistance.

Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely, (Ret), former Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army, Pacific, joined General McInerney in welcoming the announcement by Secretary Clinton and stated:

As the guns of war with Iran are becoming louder for a post-American 2012 presidential elections conflict scenario, research of the Iran Policy Committee (IPC) suggests how important it is for the Washington to refrain from hamstringing the MEK with a terrorist designation. By delisting the organization, it can increase its role in facilitating political change in Iran.

Delisting the MEK should jumpstart intelligence revelations at a critical time when such information can be useful in demonstrating Tehran's propensity to cheat on its obligations to the United Nations and potential targeting of Iranian nuclear sites, if military force has to be used as an option of last resort.

Captain Charles "Chuck" Nash, U.S. Navy (Ret), welcomed the Clinton announcement to remove the terrorist label on the MEK. Nash stated:

Like other former military officers, I am very concerned about the exposure of unarmed civilian members of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) who suffer at the mercy of their jailers in Baghdad. Because of the pushback by Tehran against the removal of the MEK terrorist designation, its members in Iraq will be subject to recrimination. The Iranian press abounds with statements against delisting, perhaps prelude for Tehran to order Baghdad to launch a third assault on the MEK members like those in 2009 and 2011.

Founder and President of Global Initiative for Democracy (GID) and former Freedom House Executive Director, Bruce McColm, said:

With the delisting of MEK, which was the most distinct yardstick for the policy of appeasing Iran, the focus must now shift to assisting the Iranian people as they endeavor to bring down their oppressive rulers. The MEK can certainly play the role of the catalyst in utilizing its enormous political and organizational wherewithal to this end.

Professor Raymond Tanter, President of the IPC and former member of the National Security Council staff in the Reagan-Bush administration, said:

It is encouraging that commitments made by the United State were reiterated on 29 August 2012, when Victoria Nuland, State Department?Spokesperson, said the Department urges the Government of Iraq to continue steps to address humanitarian concerns raised at Camp Liberty by its residents (now some 3,000 members of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq).

Specifically, Nuland said:

"The United States ... reiterates its commitment to work towards resolution of humanitarian issues at ... [Liberty], including sustainable means for the continued supply of water and electricity. The United States also reiterates its commitment to support the safety and security of the residents throughout the process of their relocation outside of Iraq."

"The United States will have to monitor implementation of such commitments," stated Tanter. ?

Dr. Daniel Pipes, President of the?Middle East Forum, has published over a dozen articles and given several interviews in multiple languages about the MEK, including on Iranian expatriate communities whose annual rallies in Paris are events attended by tens of thousands of supporters of the MEK. Concerning the announcement by Secretary Clinton to remove the MEK designation, Dr. Pipes stated, "A special vote of thanks to all those analysts, led by the indefatigable Raymond Tanter, who established that the MEK is not?terrorist and that relations with it serve the national interests of the?United States."

The quote is from Connie Make, but seems to fit me, no matter what the conversation is, sooner or later I'll turn it back to baseball. But lately, everyone I run into seems to want to tell me how bad the Blue Jays have been. I KNOW.

Anyway, today we get to watch Chad Jenkins make his first major league start. I interested to see how he does. Hopefully he, and the Jays, can keep the Rays under double digits today. It would be nice to keep us within a touchdown or so of the lead.

Some offence would be ok too. I'm kind of feeling sorry for JP, it looks like he could have used more rehab time. He's only had 2 singles since coming back from his injury. Adam Lind has been slumping too, he has more triples (2) than home runs (1) in September. Hard to believe. I guess you could throw a dart at the starting lineup and you'd be likely to hit a player slumping, and put him out of the lineup for the rest of the season. Lawrie's hitting .231 this month. Johnson .196. Escobar .229. Davis .227. Rasmus .231 with 1 home run.

How to save money when eating out with the kids

If the kids' meal options just aren't cutting it when you're out, you'll have to get creative.

I love to eat out with my children, but it can get expensive, even at family style restaurants.? If you?re clever, though, there are ways to not only save money but also have your kids eat a healthy meal.

Fortunately, we are all foodies in my family. The four of us love to cook and eat. We don?t shy away from places that you might not tag as family friendly, and many of the places we may go don?t have a formal kids menu (think Asian or Spanish tapas).

However, a little thinking things through before ordering (and maybe a little negotiating with your kids) can turn any restaurant into the ?family friendly? variety, and even save you quite a bit of cash in the process.

Consider skipping the kids menu

The most important things to keep in mind when picking your kid?s meal at a restaurant are the drink options, whether or not a vegetable is offered and what the dessert options look like. For those reasons alone, I tend to shy away from kids menus at restaurants.?Until my children learned to read, they didn?t even know there was such a thing as a kids menu.

Kids menus are sadly predictable. More often than not the childrens menus in restaurants have one vegetable -- french fries -- and come with a soft drink and dessert. Entrees range from hamburgers to mac-and-cheese to chicken fingers.

Not very inspired or healthy.

If the kids? menu does happen to have healthy options, and is reasonably priced, it may make sense to order from it, but keep these two things to keep in mind:

• If drinks are offered, see if they will substitute a soft drink or chocolate milk with seltzer or low-fat milk.
• If desserts look too indulgent, see if they?ll substitute some fresh fruit and whipped cream instead. Or consider all sharing one dessert as a family.

Share and share alike

If the kids? meal options just aren?t cutting it when you?re out, you?ll have to get creative. In an effort to have my kids eat more nutritious food?and?save money, I often have my children share a full-sized entr?e, which almost always includes a vegetable. If the vegetable isn?t one your kids will eat, ask for a substitution or a more simple preparation. (Saut?ed spinach or steamed broccoli always work in my family.)

In some restaurants, portions are so large that your child or children may be able to have a full portion from your entr?e alone, so ask ahead of time how big your own meal will be before ordering another for your kid.

Think outside the box

If you have more than one child, and they aren?t in the same food mood, ask about the possibility of ordering a half portion for kids ? often restaurants will accommodate, even if they already offer a kids menu.

Alternatively, you may want to order just an appetizer for your little ones. They?re often large enough and tend to contain vegetables. (If it doesn?t, add a veggie side.)

The key to eating healthy restaurant meals with your kids that don?t cost a fortune is feeling comfortable enough to ask for substitutions.

The original 'Twitter'? Tiny electronic tags monitor birds' social networks

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? If two birds meet deep in the forest, does anybody hear? Until now, nobody did, unless an intrepid biologist was hiding underneath a bush and watching their behavior, or the birds happened to meet near a research monitoring station. But an electronic tag designed at the University of Washington can for the first time see when birds meet in the wild.

A new study led by a biologist at Scotland's University of St. Andrews used the UW tags to see whether crows might learn to use tools from one another. The findings, published last week in Current Biology, supported the theory by showing an unexpected amount of social mobility, with the crows often spending time near birds outside their immediate family.

The study looked at crows in New Caledonia, an archipelago of islands in the South Pacific. The crows are famous for using different tools to extract prey from deadwood and vegetation. Biologists wondered whether the birds might learn by watching each other.

The results, as reported by St. Andrews, revealed "a surprising number of contacts" between non-related crows. During one week, the technology recorded more than 28,000 interactions among 34 crows. While core family units of New Caledonian crows contain only three members, the study found all the birds were connected to the larger social network.

The new paper is the first published study using the UW tags to record animal social interactions.

"This is a new type of animal-tracking technology," said co-author Brian Otis, a UW associate professor of electrical engineering whose lab developed the tags. "Ecology is just one of the many fields that will be transformed with miniaturized, low-power wireless sensors."

Biologists normally tag animals with radio transmitters that broadcast at a particular frequency, and field researchers use a receiver to listen for that frequency and detect when the animal is present. An encounter between small animals would only be recorded if the researcher was nearby.

The UW system, called Encounternet, uses programmable digital tags that can send and receive pulses.

"Encounternet tags can monitor each other, so you can use them to study interactions among animals," said co-author John Burt, a UW affiliate professor of electrical engineering. "You can't even start to do that with other radio-tracking technology."

Other research groups are using the UW tags around the world. Researchers at the University of Windsor in Canada are using them to study mating behavior in Costa Rican long-tailed manikins; a researcher at Drexel University is using them to study the interaction between birds and army ants in Costa Rica; German researchers are putting the tags on sea lions in the Galapagos Islands to study their behavior as they pull up on beaches; and researchers in the Netherlands are studying the social behavior of great tits, a small woodland bird. "It's a big topic right now, the idea that animals have social networks," Burt said. He has been working with field biologists for the last three years to deploy the tags.

"There are other tags that can do proximity logging, but they're all very big and for larger animals. None is as small as Encounternet -- or even near to it."

The smallest of the UW tags weighs less than 1 gram (0.035 ounces) and can be used on animals as light as 20 grams (less than an ounce), about the weight of a sparrow.

Researchers attach the tags to birds with straps that degrade and harmlessly fall off after the battery dies. The tag records nearby pulses, and the signal strength gives an estimate of the other animal's distance.

A typical study using the system includes a few dozen tags and between 10 and 100 fixed base stations. When tagged animals pass a base station the data is transmitted wirelessly from the tag to the base station, and from there to the Internet. Researchers can also reprogram the tags remotely -- for example, they can look at initial results to see when there are few encounters happening, and turn the battery off during those times to conserve power.

Burt completed his doctorate at the UW in 2000, with a dissertation on birdsong communication and learning. He wished that there was a way to automatically monitor bird interactions in the wild, and in 2005 joined forces with Otis, an expert in small, lightweight, low-power electronics. Burt managed the project to develop the tags, with funding from the National Science Foundation, as a research scientist in Otis' group. This fall they founded Encounternet LLC in Portland, Ore., where Burt now lives. He is working to add a GPS component to record the location of encounters, and to add an accelerometer and other sensors that could detect an animal's behavior.

"People are excited about this because for the first time, it allows them to study smaller animal interactions and social networks on an incredibly fine scale," Burt said. "Social networks are turning out to be key to understanding many animal behaviors. People say Encounternet is the only thing they can find that can collect that information."

Japan posts $9.6B Aug. trade deficit; exports down

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan posted a smaller-than-expected trade deficit of $9.6 billion for August, as exports to Europe and other Asian countries plunged, further undermining hopes for an export-driven revival.

The 754.1 billion yen ($9.6 billion) deficit in August was smaller than the $9.9 billion deficit reported a year earlier, the Finance Ministry reported Thursday.

Exports in August totaled 5.05 trillion yen ($64.33 billion), down 5.8 percent from a year earlier, while imports fell 5.4 percent to 5.8 trillion yen ($73.9 billion).

The strong Japanese yen has bit into exports while demand has evaporated in crisis-stricken Europe. Meanwhile, the country's energy imports have risen following closures of most of its nuclear plants.

Japan has eked out small trade surpluses in some months this year but reported a record annual trade deficit for the fiscal year that ended in March.

Though the deficit for August was lower than the more than 800 billion yen that some analysts had forecast, prolonged weakness in Europe and recent friction with China, Japan's biggest single overseas market, suggest it will likely persist in coming months.

Exports to Europe sank 28 percent in August from a year earlier, to 484.9 billion yen ($6.2 billion) while exports to Asia ? Japan's biggest overseas market ? sank 6.7 percent overall to 2.84 trillion yen ($36.2 billion).

Even before a recent territorial dispute flared, sparking riots across China, exports were weakening. They fell 9.9 percent from a year earlier to 966.3 billion yen ($12.3 billion), the Finance Ministry reported.

Moving to spur growth and cushion the impact of the strong yen on exporters, Japan's central bank on Wednesday announced it would boost the size and duration of a government bond-buying program that's intended to encourage borrowing and spending and make Japan's exports more competitive.

"There remains a high degree of uncertainty about the global economy," the bank said, saying that overcoming deflation and returning to sustainable growth was a "critical challenge."

"The pick-up in economic activity has come to a pause," it said, forecasting that activity will remain flat.

Central banks already have pushed short-term rates nearly as low as possible. That leaves government bond purchases as one of their few remaining tools.

The bond-buying program is intended to encourage borrowing and spending and make Japan's exports more competitive by exerting downward pressure on interest rates and on the yen, whose rise has made Japanese products more expensive relative to other countries' exports.

The move appeared to have little immediate impact. Though the Japanese yen weakened Wednesday to 79.17 yen per dollar by mid-afternoon, by Thursday morning it had rebounded, trading at 78.38 yen per dollar.

The presiding judge, Snezana Nikolic Garotic, said on Wednesday that the sentenced men were found guilty of abuse, rape and torture of protected witnesses C1 and C2.

The two women, both Kosovo Serbs, were kidnapped on June 17, 1999, taken to a dormitory in Gnjilane and raped, humiliated and tortured on a daily basis until they managed to flee to Serbia on June 23.

?Medical documentation matched the testimonies of protected witnesses and, although there were some discrepancies with their preliminary testimony in Nis in 1999 regarding the time of the crime, the court accepted their testimonies as authentic,? explained Judge Nikolic Garotic.

The judge added that the Trial Chamber unanimously concluded that the defendants violated the Geneva Convention.

The court rejected the prosecution?s claims that the Kosovo conflict lasted till December 1999, when the Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA, was disarmed, since Serb forces withdrew from the territory on June 20.

The court also dismissed the testimony from the prosecution?s key witness, code-named Bozur 50, on whose testimony the indictment was based.

?The witness talked about widely known facts which were of no significance for the trial. The court checked his claims that bodies of the victims were incinerated and butchered and after forensic examination established that the bodies intact."

"Also, we investigated claims that bodies were put into bags and thrown into the Livac Lake. However, after the lake has been searched, no remains were found,? said the judge.

The judge added that 206 witnesses were examined in the course of the trial, 179 of victims and ?families of victims.

?All 179 of these witnesses described the events in Gnjilane, but not those specified in the indictment, but other crimes for which they specifically blamed their Albanian neighbours. None of the witnesses described the events specified in the indictment. Also, none of them named the defendants as perpetrators,? explained the judge.

The judge emphasised that in this case the prosecution was dealing with a staged event and misused the suffering of victims, and dismissed the prosecution?s claims that the defendants threatened the prosecution during the trial.

A court in Belgrade sentenced nine members of the Gnjilane Group to a total of 101 years in prison for war crimes against civilians on January 21, 2011.

The War Crime Chamber of the Appellate Court in Belgrade quashed that verdict on December 7, 2011, and set the case for a retrial.

The War Crimes Prosecution?s Office is satisfied with the sentencing part of the verdict, but it said it would appeal the acquittal of six defendants.

The defence also announced they would appeal to the Appellate Court.

Facing anti-malaria nets, mosquitoes alter habits

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - After two African villages started using mosquito nets to fight malaria, the local mosquitoes seemed to change their biting habits to skirt the barriers, a new study finds.

Insecticide-treated bed nets are considered a central weapon in the global fight against malaria - an infectious disease transmitted by parasite-carrying mosquitoes. Malaria kills more than 650,000 people a year, according to the World Health Organization - most of them babies and children in sub-Saharan Africa.

In the new study, French researchers zeroed in on mosquito behavior before and after all households in two African villages were given insecticide-treated nets.

They found that mosquitoes seemed to change their hours of "peak aggression" from 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. to around 5 a.m. three years after nets were put up.

And in one village, the proportion of mosquito bites inflicted outdoors rose, the researchers reported in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Outdoor bites accounted for 45 percent of all bites at the outset but rose to 68 percent one year later and 61 percent after three years.

The finding is "worrying since villagers usually wake up before dawn to work in crops, and as such they are not protected by mosquito nets," senior researcher Vincent Corbel, of the Montpellier, France-based Institute of Research for Development, said in an email.

Still, the results come from just two villages in one country, Benin.

"We cannot extrapolate to a wider geographical area and/or a different entomological context," Corbel said. Entomology is the study of insects.

A malaria researcher not involved in the study said the results should be interpreted with caution.

One reason is the difficulty in getting reliable measures of mosquito "biting behavior" over time, according to Thomas Eisele, from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans.

In this study, Corbel's team used the standard way of gauging mosquitoes' activity - the "human landing catch" - which, as the names implies, means that a mosquito collector lets the pest land on his skin, then catches it.

The researchers had mosquito collectors do three different rounds (indoors and outdoors) at each village: once before nets were given to all households, then again one year and three years afterward.

"Obtaining measures such as biting behavior is fraught with error, in that it is difficult to do exactly the same way across replications," Eisele said in an email.

But most importantly, he added, "this study was conducted over only a couple of years, which would likely be insufficient to detect evolutionary changes in biting behaviors within the same species of Anopheles."

The mosquitoes studied were of the Anopheles funestus species, one of the two main malaria vectors in Africa.

Mosquito nets have been credited with spurring big drops in malaria deaths, Corbel noted.

A report for the Cochrane Collaboration, an international group that publishes rigorous reviews, estimated that for every 1,000 children protected by an insecticide-treated net, five to six lives would be saved each year.

But in recent years, malaria cases have started to climb again in certain African countries, Corbel pointed out.

Experts have mainly been concerned about mosquitoes' growing resistance to the insecticides used in bed nets and for indoor spraying. Earlier this year, the World Health Organization said resistance had been detected in 64 countries.

The WHO also issued a plan that said each country at risk must analyze the extent of its insecticide resistance and design a preemptive strategy, rather than waiting for resistance to increase.

Corbel said the current findings challenge the "dogma" that malaria-transmitting mosquitoes in Africa bite exclusively at night.

"Long-lasting insecticidal nets were developed to protect people at night when they are sleeping," Corbel said.

But if mosquitoes shift to early-morning and outdoor biting, those nets might not be enough to keep malaria under control, according to Corbel.

He said more research should be done into the possible effects of different mosquito-control methods on the insects' behavior.

Housing starts rise less than expected

It was mixed?news for a Federal Reserve looking to the housing market for help lifting the economy.

Housing starts rose?2.3 percent in August, boosted by single-family home construction, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.?While the?pace of single-family home building was the fastest in more than two years, the overall?number was less than expected and permits to break ground on new construction slipped.

The Commerce Department said?housing starts increased?to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 750,000 units. July's starts were revised to show a 733,000-unit pace instead of the previously reported 746,000.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast residential construction rising to a 765,000-unit rate. Compared to August last year, residential construction was up 29.1 percent.

Housing starts are now a third of their 2.27 million-unit peak in January 2006. The housing market, the Achilles heel of the recovery from the 2007-09 recession, is?healing, but slowly.

Sales have been creeping up and the house price decline has bottomed, with a tightening supply of properties on the market raising prices in some metropolitan areas. In addition, homebuilder sentiment touched a six-year high in September.

Home building is expected to add to gross domestic product growth this year for the first time since 2005.

Though residential construction accounts for about 2.5 percent of GDP, economists estimate that for every new house built, at least three new jobs are created.

The Fed moved last week to bolster the economy, announcing it would buy $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities per month until the outlook for employment improved significantly. The move is an attempt to drive down long-term interest rates and induce lending, including for?mortgages.?

Last month, groundbreaking for single-family homes, the largest segment of the market, rose 5.5 percent to a 535,000-unit pace -- the highest level since April 2010. Starts for multi-family homes fell 4.9 percent.

Building permits slipped 1.0 percent to a 803,000-unit pace in August after surging the prior month to the highest in four years. July's permits were unrevised at 811,000 units.

Economists had expected permits to fall to a 796,000-unit pace. Permits to build single-family homes rose 0.2 percent last month to a 512,000-unit pace. Permits for multi-family homes fell 3.0 percent to a 291,000-unit rate.?
