VIENNA (AP) ? Thousands of children were murdered by the Nazis because they fell short of the Aryan ideal. On Friday, a hushed audience gathered in Austria's Parliament to watch the world premiere of an opera depicting how the Nazis methodically killed mentally or physically deficient children at a Vienna hospital during World War II.

The killings were part of a greater campaign that led to the deaths of about 75,000 people ? homosexuals, the handicapped, or others the Nazis called "unworthy lives" ? and served as a prelude to the Holocaust.

Austrians played a huge role in these and other atrocities of the era ? nearly 800 children were killed at Vienna's Spiegelgrund psychiatric ward ? and Friday's premiere of the opera "Spiegelgrund" was the latest installment of a national effort to atone for such acts in word and deed.

The timing was picked to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, which will be observed worldwide Sunday, and the performance was streamed live on the Internet for international audiences. But the parliamentary venue was chosen for a particularly Austrian reason: as a reminder of how the country's politicians fomented the atmosphere of intolerance and authoritarianism that allowed Hitler's troops to walk in in 1938, and a determination to not let history repeat itself.

Composer Peter Androsch said his focus on the era was in part born of his own family's history. His great grandfather died in a Nazi concentration camp. Androsch said the fact that that was hidden for generations "says a lot about conditions in totalitarian regimes and should serve as a reminder for me and many others."

At the premiere ? a hauntingly effective hour-long performance ? legislators were joined in the audience by diplomats, Holocaust survivors, former Spiegelgrund patients and other invited guests in an ornate chamber lined with Ionic columns and used for special legislative sessions.

Spiegelgrund survivor Friedrich Zavel was in the audience. He was brought to the clinic in 1940 after being accused of homosexuality. Now 83, he still shudders when he speaks of his ordeals: humiliation, solitary confinement and torture.

The "Wrap Treatment" consisted of orderlies binding a child first in two sheets soaked in ice water, then two dry sheets, followed by waiting for days without food and drink until the body warmth dried the sheets. There also were beatings and injections that either made the child vomit or left him unable to walk for days.

Asked Friday how he felt about the wrongs done to him, Zavel said: "I know neither revenge nor hate."

The opera itself was more of an oratory. Backlit in gloomy purple and red, and accompanied by strings, flute, percussion and a harpsichord, a trio slipped into each other's roles in an allegorical depiction of how all are victims and perpetrators.

Thus a white-coated doctor embodying "The Law" switched from vocalizing about Sparta's doctrine of letting weak newborns die to singing a child's ditty before moving to the role of "Memory" ? singing broken phrases that harken back to the horrific experiences of the victimized children. The two other singers shifted roles accordingly as a narrator dryly recited facts reflecting the atrocities committed.

"On some days, so many children were killed that the orderlies had to pile the little bodies on a wheelbarrow," narrator Karl Sibelius intones in one sequence before reading a letter from a mother addressed to an institute doctor and pleading for the return of her son.

Bass Robert Holzer was "The Law," and sopranos Katerina Beranova and Alexandra Diesterhoeft sang "Memory" and "Children's Song" respectively. All were very solid.

Parliament President Barbara Prammer said the nation could no longer focus only on glorifying its past.

"We can't choose our history," she told The Associated Press.

Crystal Cruises entices bookings through brand ... - Luxury Daily

Crystal Symphony

Crystal Cruises is eyeing affluent travelers by offering exclusive Mediterranean excursions on its spring itineraries that cannot be accessed through other travel brands.

The cruise line?s new collection of experiences called ?Boutique Adventures? will be available this spring for groups ranging from one to 15 travelers on Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity ships sailing to the Mediterranean. Guests will have exclusive access to estates, art studios, museums, castles and businesses.

?Our guests are looking for different ways to experience destinations and they relish insider access,? said Mimi Weisband, vice president of public relations at?Crystal Cruises, Los Angeles. ?We are continually challenging our tour operators to seek out the unusual, experiential, intimate, cultural adventures.

?Our guests do not want a mass-market excursion ? they will pay more for something if it is unique and authentic,? she said.

Cruising the Mediterranean
There are seven Boutique Adventures that guests can choose. The cost ranges from $223 to more than $1,000 per guest.

Travelers can book the excursions online up to six months before their cruise.

The Florence excursion comprises a viewing of the Uffizi Gallery?s private Contini Bonacossi Collection, which is not accessible to the public.

In Funchal, Portugal, guests will have lunch with a local celebrity at Reid?s Palace or visit a family-run Madeiran winery where they will dine with the owners.

During the Rome experience, guests will make their own jewelry with instruction from a former Valentino model who now designs jewelry.

The Corfu, Greece, excursion consists of a painting lesson from the president of the Corfu Painters Society.

In Italy?s Vetriano, guests will attend the opera at Teatro Concordia, the?smallest public theater in the world.

Teatro Concordia

Excursions in Sorrento and Taormina, Italy, comprise?cooking lessons and meals with local, Michelin-star chefs.

In Taormina in Italy?s Sicily region, travelers will be served a meal while watching a classical concert at a Sicilian castle.

Crystal Cruises will promote the Boutique Adventures via its Web site, quarterly magazine and the on-board Shore Excursion team, per Ms. Weisband.

In addition, travel agents will also inform their clients about the experiences.

?The cruise industry has been becoming more aware of the large portion of the affluent travelers who shy away from cruises due to many misconceptions and overall lack of desire to be on-board the mega-ships,? said D.M. Banks, director at?DMB Public Relations, New York.

?Crystal Cruises is always looking at ways to provide the luxuries of cruises, while providing a boutique experience for their guests,? he said. ?This is another example of them thinking outside of the box to truly connect with their guests.

?Affluent travelers are more than happy to pay a premium for superior services and, more importantly, unique and personalized experiences. These intimate and semi-private excursions are great ways for guest to feel more immersed into the culture and destinations while at port.?

Story time
The new Boutique Adventures are meant to align with Crystal Cruises? ?Begin a New Story? ad campaign that launched last year, per Ms. Weisband.

The cruise line rebranded itself during the second quarter of 2012 through an all-encompassing campaign that centers on the notion of the travel journal and encourages consumers to share memories from past cruises.

The marketing efforts focus on cruise destinations and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, rather than the amenities of the ship.

Begin a New Story uses multiple channels including print ads with digital watermark technology, brochures, online banner ads, email, video and a smartphone app.

For instance, print ads appear in Cond? Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler, Town & Country, Travel & Leisure, Coastal Living, Elle D?cor, Food & Wine and Forbes Life.

Consumers can scan the ads with their smartphones to reveal a 60-second video that shows three travelers? experiences in select Crystal Cruises? destinations through watercolor animation.

The brand asked eight watercolor artists to create images that are used in all aspects of the campaign (see story).

?The trend for affluent consumers is more intimate and incredibly special ? both of which are key to these excursions,? Ms. Weisband said.

?Entering someone?s home, sharing a meal with them and just a few other guests, and being able to hear in-depth stories of living and working in that area from your host ? these are experiences that can be deeply personal, bonding and memorable, really expanding one?s understanding of a culture far beyond any info gleaned from merely sight-seeing,? she said.

?Affluent consumers crave such experiences that go beyond the norm, as so many of them travel at a level well above the basics.?

Israelis offer a 'Yom Huledet Sameach' to Ben Yehuda, resurrector of Hebrew language

Eliezer Ben Yehuda, who transformed Hebrew from the rusty language of ancient Israel and the Bible into the dynamic, dominant language of modern-day Israel, would be 155 years old today.

By Christa Case Bryant,?Staff Writer / January 8, 2013

This December, 2012 photo shows visitors at the Mahane Yehuda market, one of Jerusalem's free tourist attractions. Beyond its earthly past, Jerusalem has an impossible beauty with broad appeal. For residents and tourists, secular and religious souls, city slickers or nature lovers, there is always an unexplored alleyway, street corner or vista that will show you the city as you?ve never seen it before.

Since I?m a new journalist in Israel who happens to love ice cream and arrived here with only one piece of furniture to my name, that would be grave indeed.

So I for one am grateful for Mr. Ben Yehuda, who was born 155 years ago today in the Russian empire.

Legend has it that the man was not only brilliant, but a little crazy. And you would have to be, if you were planning to try to resurrect an ancient language after roughly 2,000 years and expect it to become the primary spoken language of a country that didn't even exist yet.

But the Sorbonne-educated Ben Yehuda did just that ??well before the state of Israel was founded in 1948, and even before Lord Balfour of Britain made his famous promise to the Zionists in 1917 to help establish a Jewish homeland.

Of course, Hebrew was the language of the Torah ? the biblical books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy ? as well as other religious writings. So many Jews were familiar with it. But they didn?t use it to talk about things like grocery shopping or even politics.

Where to start? With your family, of course. When Ben Yehuda arrived in Israel with his family, he banned his wife and children from speaking any other language. According to tradition, his family was the first to speak exclusively Hebrew in the home.

He also helped start schools and Hebrew-language newspapers, and published the first dictionary of modern Hebrew, often drawing on biblical words to coin modern terms. Ultra-Orthodox Jews pushed back hard, arguing that Hebrew is a holy language and not to be used to discuss the mundane. Many of them still prefer to speak in Yiddish when discussing daily affairs.

But Hebrew is nevertheless the dominant language in Israel today, although Arabic is an official language as well.

But I digress.

You were wondering about how to order ice cream, right?

G'lida. That?s your ticket.

Todah (thank you), Ben Yehuda.

Jindal: GOP should change 'just about everything'

(AP) ? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is calling on the Republican Party to "recalibrate the compass of conservatism" as the GOP rebounds from painful Election Day losses.

The governor will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting Thursday night in Charlotte, N.C., becoming the latest high-profile conservative from outside Washington to call for fundamental changes inside the GOP.

In speech excerpts released earlier in the day, Jindal says the Republican Party doesn't need to change its values, but, "might need to change just about everything else we do."

"We do not need to change what we believe as conservatives ? our principles are timeless," Jindal says. "But we do need to re-orient our focus to the place where conservatism thrives: in the real world beyond the Washington Beltway."

The GOP is too focused on number-crunching on Capitol Hill, he continues, and not focused enough on economic growth across the nation.

"Today's conservatism is completely wrapped up in solving the hideous mess that is the federal budget, the burgeoning deficits, the mammoth federal debt, the shortfall in our entitlement programs," he says. "We seem to have an obsession with government bookkeeping. This is a rigged game, and it is the wrong game for us to play."

The comments come a day after the House passed a bill to permit the government to borrow enough money to avoid a first-time default for at least four months, defusing a looming crisis setting up a springtime debate over taxes, spending and the deficit. The House passed the measure on a bipartisan basis as majority Republicans back away from their previous demand that any increase in the government's borrowing cap be paired with an equivalent level of spending cuts.

"The Republican Party must become the party of growth, the party of a prosperous future that is based in our economic growth and opportunity that is based in every community in this great country and that is not based in Washington, D.C.," Jindal says.

The Louisiana governor's comments come shortly after another high-profile Republican based outside Washington publicly blasted GOP leadership on Capitol Hill.

One of the party's most popular voices, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, earlier in the month criticized his party's "toxic internal politics" after House Republicans initially declined to approve disaster relief for victims of Superstorm Sandy. He said it was "disgusting to watch" their actions and he faulted the GOP's most powerful elected official, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Republican officials from across the country are gathering in North Carolina this week to begin shaping a path forward following their party's November shellacking.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., told reporters on the sidelines of the meeting Thursday that Republicans also need to develop a sound strategy for confronting the Obama administration, suggesting House Republicans could use hearings to expose waste and promote better ideas.

"A lot of Republicans frankly spent the last two years saying 'Oh gee, we don't have to do much because after Obama loses we'll work with the new Republican president.' Well, that world ain't there," Gingrich said. "So now they have to make adjustments. They've got to understand that this is a different game."

? Non-GAAP EPS: $10.65 vs. $10.52.

? CPC was down 6% year over year, but up 2% q/q, arresting what had been a quarterly decline for the past several quarters.

That's a decent beat, and the stock is up 3%.

?Revenues were up 36% year-on-year, and 8% quarter-on-quarter. And we hit $50 billion in revenues for the first time last year ? not a bad achievement in just a decade and a half. Google will have an earnings call to discuss the earnings starting around 4:30pm.

Patrick: On Google sites, quite a bit of noise because of FX. Overall, pleased with growth around 20%, last quarter more headwinds. We are pleased with YouTube business. Despite FX noise, which carriers over to sites, we're pleased with overall growth.

On TAC, as we said, we think of TAC, it's distribution and it's worth paying for. Our apps across, and it's true for mobile. All of the mobile is thriving to the extent that it is. Nothing new here, but excited by the trends.

Larry: Rolled out knowledge graph recently, some of the internationalization is hard work. Something like 1% of where we should be. Economics point, I think, way we look at it is we provide better answers, so we can grow the business. Increase the modality, voice, mobile, I'm super excited. Generally we monetize these things.

Knowledge runs on right side where ads run, so could be short term impact, but getting people better answers is good in the long run.

Just rolled out Google shopping. Tremendous uptake from consumers, but no details on how it will change.

Larry: I think we've always done a good job sending people to the right places. I don't think that being able to answer complex question wouldn't mean sending to other site. I think I used the hotel. Still might use other sites. But we are looking at those things. Google aspiration do that for any area, not just travel. Working with as many companies as we can. Trying to be practical about it. Assets in travel.

Patrick: Answer, [CPC] on a y/y basis, down 4%, on q/q up 1%, fix FX adjusted

Larry: I think that people are always focused on monetization of maps. Important to look at history. Thought it was critical to search experience. If we look at part that is geographically related, we need to understand where things are in the real world. We make quite a bit of money on web search, so we already make quite a bit of money in that way, which let us make those investments. Early stages of monetization on maps themselves. Still in early stages.

Asking about graph search ... when we think about search, organize the world's information. Been at that for quite a while. Investments in all sorts of areas like maps. There's knowledge search, mixing data, we continue to do that. Our business changed a lot. 10 years ago what you thought Google should do almost unrecognizable what it can do now.

Look at voice, and all the investment we've done there. Very focused on that.

Now is another example, answers question before you ask it.

So I feel confident of our core business. I couldn't be more excited.

Larry: I think we are excited ... in early days of Motorola in terms of Google's acquisition of it.

On driverless cars, early days. Excited about it and what it can mean for ordinary people.

Android, diff than automated cars.

Patrick: On Motorola, we do want it to be profitable. Don't forget we're working through a product pipeline.

Larry: Mobile business, doing well, tremendous growth. Serving users well, amazing progress. Rate of improvement is high. Assume usage will follow good products. Consider mobile extension of our desktop. People use maps on desktop, transferred very well. Chrome on Android is an amazing experience. Those phones are like using a desktop last year. Experiences improving a lot and quickly. Very optimistic about it. CPCs will improve. I mentioned we are working to simplify advertising process. Excited about that.

Larry: We run a number of businesses. We have a lot of people, growing at edge of what's reasonable. It has moderated.

Patrick: If you go back, it has been really lumpy. Gone from billions to hundreds of millions. Testament. You'll see a data center, we spend for data center, then an extension, just the nature of the business. Quite lumpy. A billion of CapEx, aligned with excitement around our products. Fueled by positive momentum in many areas, now is time to invest.

Larry: We find our business works better if our hiring is reasonably smooth.

Larry: Not making predictions about CPCs. I don't think this is a long term problem. I think as I've said before, advantages to mobile. Notified instantly, camera, lots of opportunities, expect that OT revolutionize marketing. Generate a lot more money than we do now.

Nikesh: On China ... we do operate there. We have ad sales. Many Android users.

Patrick: In case of Motorola no impairment related to patents from FTC decision.

Larry: Early, but excited.

Patrick: Excited about Kansas City, focused on KC, growing in terms of installs, people love the product. It's been a great success overall. It's not a hobby, we think we should be making good business, look at business expanding. We got to nail, good place to debug the product and the experience.

Larry: Over next few years, best way to predict future is to make it, so that's what we're trying to do. Google Now, if you have your question before you have it. Wouldn't it be great for you if we had answers to your questions. Would save you some time.?

Patrick: On display, we'll give numbers occasionally, but not on Q/Q.

Nikesh on iOS YouTube app: Tremendous success, we think we're excited and we think partners excited too.

Bath Rugby Chief Executive, Nick Blofeld, commented: "We were delighted with the public support in response to the proposal for the Recreation Ground, and would like to thank everyone who made representations to the Charity Commission.

"This is an important step forward in keeping us at the Rec. We will continue to work with all interested parties with the aim of achieving a positive outcome for the Club and the residents of Bath, and will come forward with more detailed plans for Bath Rugby to remain at the Rec in due course after this stage of the process is complete."

Whilst the large majority were in favour of the plans, there were 244 (13%) objections, so the Commission will need to assess these before deciding whether or not to confirm the proposals. This is expected to be completed by April.

As you may be aware, an application for the Rec to become a Town and Village Green has been served to the Council, with public notices being placed around the Rec boundaries. As this application has been made to the Council, and they will make a decision, we are not yet in a position to make any comment on it.

Obama's second term: What history says to expect

The myths and realities of second-term presidents ? and what they portend for Obama.

By Robert A. Lehrman,?Correspondent / January 19, 2013

President Barack Obama gestures as he speaks about the fiscal cliff late last month at the White House in Washington. This is the cover story in the Jan. 21 issue of The Christian Science MonitorWeekly.

They sit outside the Oval Office beside a table still piled with Christmas gifts: four White House aides waiting for the president. It is January 1997. They're supposed to talk with Bill Clinton about his inaugural, laying out themes for his second term.

Three of them agree on one thing. It's time to retire that worn-out phrase they'd used so much in the past four years ? "bridge to the 21st century."

"We've got to be straight with him," Michael Waldman, Mr. Clinton's chief speechwriter, tells the others.

The door to the Oval opens. Clinton walks out. Without even saying hello, he says: "I don't see why we can't use bridge to the 21st century."

Mr. Waldman wrote later about the answer they all chorused: "Absolutely, sir."

"We were all well aware of the curse of the second term," he comments in his book "POTUS Speaks." "[F]ew had worked out well."

Today, well into that 21st century, Barack Obama is about to become the 21st president of the United States to serve a second term. He'll deliver his inaugural against a backdrop of commentary, much of it about the "curse" Waldman mentions.

"Triumphant Obama Faces New Foe in 'Second-Term Curse,' " read one headline a day after the 2012 election.

"Can Obama dodge the Second-Term Trap?" asked another.

Googling "second-term curse" yields as many as 4 million results. Lots of people believe it ? including President Obama, at least in part. "I'm well aware of the history of second-term overreach," he has said.

But does that mean it's true? Or is the truth closer to what Rutgers University presidential historian David Greenberg termed in a recent New Republic piece ? "The Myth of Second-Term Failure"?

Whether one believes in the curse or not, second-term presidents inevitably confront problems both unexpected and familiar. Obama will, too. Does the past hold any clues about how to overcome them?

According to Waldman, back then Clinton was taken with the ideas of Yale University historian Stephen Skowronek. Waldman remembers Clinton arguing that the best-remembered presidents "are those who take bold stands to upend the existing order."

OK, but how?

First, some background.

* * *

Those 21 second-termers include three presidents who were elected to second terms but didn't complete them, either because of assassination (Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley) or resignation (Richard Nixon). It also includes four who assumed the office after the death of a sitting president and then were elected to a second term (Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon Johnson).

Second-termers aren't sprinkled evenly throughout American history. Five of the first seven US presidents won second terms: Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Jackson.

In the 100 years between Jackson and F.D.R., the US only had seven. But in the past 32 years, it's had four out of the last five: Ronald Reagan, Clinton, George W. Bush, and now Obama ? only George H.W. Bush missed out.

When it comes to the last half century, the second-term curse might seem real. For several of the seven modern second-term presidents, a single image of failure overshadowed many of their achievements:

Computer Games ? Confronting Video Game Addiction

Video game addiction is on the increase around the world. As more people spend increased amounts of time in front of computer or TV screens, it is becoming a serious problem.

Video games used to be played with a group of friends at home. However, online gaming is now becoming increasingly popular. This is where people play against opponents via the internet and create a kind of online social gaming community.

This virtual interaction can in some cases become a substitute for real interaction and players can become addicted to beating their virtual opponents ? playing games for hours at a time.

This can be bad for their health because there is no one to check on the player and they can be stuck alone in a room, immersed in their computer games for long periods.

The goal is often about getting to the next level with these games and this can tip over into addiction as the person tries to beat opponents or improve their personal best score.

Spending too much time in front of computer screens can not only be addictive but also bad for the eyes and general physical fitness. It is a very sedentary pursuit and means the body is starved of exercise and sunlight, which it needs to function.

Playing computer games alone can also lead to feelings of isolation which could contribute long-term to mental health problems.

Video game addiction can even get so bad that people forget to take a break to eat or drink. There was a recent case where Taiwanese man died after playing a computer game for 40 hours straight without taking a break.

The young man had booked himself into a room at a local internet cafe and stayed there for two days straight playing a game without eating. When found he was still conscious but collapsed shortly afterwards and died in hospital.

The authorities suspected that the long hours spent in a sedentary position playing an intense game, without food or breaks, may have caused cardiovascular problems which led to his death.

This is of course a very rare occurrence but it shows that video game addictions can lead to serious consequences and should not be taken lightly. If an individual is suspected to be in a vulnerable situation due to their gaming habit, then there are steps friends or relatives can take to help them.

There are now video game addiction advisory services that can help with these issues. They can even refer individuals onto clinics that can deal with their addictive behaviour. So there is help out there for those who think they might have video game addiction.

Video Game Addiction is an organisation that provides an advisory service to help people who may be addicted to playing computer games. They are specialists in this field and can refer people onto clinics to help with their addiction. Video Game Addiction can also offer advice to friends and family who are worried their loved one might be addicted to playing video games. Filmmaker Dabis casts fresh Sundance face: herself

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? Filmmaker Cherien Dabis has introduced a fresh new actor to crowds at the Sundance Film Festival: herself.

In her latest trip to the independent-cinema showcase, the comic drama "May in the Summer," writer-director Dabis put herself through a rigorous casting process before deciding she was the right person for the title role.

Dabis had been repeatedly asked if she ever thought about acting while she was promoting her earlier drama "Amreeka," which premiered at Sundance in 2009.

Unable to find just the right woman, Dabis cast herself after a long audition process, putting herself on tape several times and getting encouraging responses from friends and colleagues.

"I thought, I'm still not convinced, because I keep showing it to people who know me, and they're probably just flattering me," Dabis said. "I just want to send it to someone in the industry who has no idea who I am, doesn't know my background, doesn't know I'm directing this movie and can give kind of an objective opinion. So I sent my tape along with tapes of two other actresses who were up for the part."

Her audition earned kind words from her objective observer ? an industry veteran who wound up becoming an acting coach for Dabis to prepare for the role.

The casting choice has worked so far. "May in the Summer" was given a choice slot at Sundance, premiering on opening-day Thursday to start the 11-day festival's U.S. dramatic competition.

"May in the Summer" stars Dabis as an Arab-American woman reuniting with her family in Jordan while she plans her wedding, amid doubts about her relationship and difficulties with her dysfunctional relatives.

Among the cast are two of Dabis' "Amreeka" actresses ? Hiam Abbass and Alia Shawkat. Both said Dabis made a natural transition from behind the camera to the front and shifted skillfully between both jobs.

"It's more classically normal for an actor to become a director. It's more rare to have a director become an actor. But she had it. She had it," Abbass said. "I watched some of the tapes that she put herself on. It was very believable, and I basically said, just go for it. If this is what you feel right for you and for the story."

Shawkat also stated the obvious: that the 36-year-old Dabis already looked like she belonged on camera.

"She's such a stunningly beautiful woman. Everyone is like, 'She's a director?' On 'Amreeka,' she had her hair back all the time, never wore makeup, she had on sweatshirts, and she's still beautiful," Shawkat said. "I remember when I met her in Jordan after a little time had passed. She just looked like, with her hair and makeup, I said, 'You're stunning.' She looked like a movie star."

Other directors have cast Dabis in two films of their own, including one set to start shooting in Palestine this spring. Dabis said she's looking forward to working solely as an actor and may continue to shift back and forth between directing and performing.

"I sort of took the leap of faith. I faced a huge fear. I didn't want to admit to myself that acting, that it was something I wanted to pursue, in part because I was terrified of making myself vulnerable," Dabis said. "It's always something I've admired about actors, and that kept me very much hiding behind the camera. So now that I've taken that leap and faced the fear, I'm definitely open to it."

Weather systems seek Victor, Volker or Vincent - The Local

Berlin's Free University is looking for men whose names start with V, have a bit of cash to spare and would like to have a lower pressure weather system named after them.

Meteorologists at the university have traditionally sold off the names for weather systems to finance their 24-hour weather monitoring, and run through the alphabet - but are missing male names starting with V. There are also spaces free for names starting with X, N and P during 2013.

This year low pressure systems, which are generally associated with rainy weather, are being given male names - and the right to decide on the name can be bought for ?199.

High pressure systems will be given female names - and because they are more popular, being associated with better weather, have nearly sold out despite costing ?299.

Click here for The Local's weather forecast

The weather system sponsor not only has the chance to determine the name of a high or low, but also receives a certificate and a description of 'their' weather.

Nicknames are allowed - such as Pille, which was secured by a man called Philipp Kretschmer, and Schorsch which comes from a sponsor called Gregor Himmler.

The Free University names are not official but have been adopted by meteorologists from the German Weather Service for years. The practice of giving weather systems names only became firmly established in Germany in the early 1990s, after the winter storms Vivian and Wiebke.

The weather sponsorship team said they would auction off any remaining options to name a system on Ebay if they were unable to find enough customers.

Judge dismisses case involving targeting killing of Americans overseas

The ACLU and New York Times had sought access to government documents explaining the legal justification for a US drone strike that killed Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen and suspected Al Qaeda operative in Yemen.

A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed most of two lawsuits seeking disclosure of US government documents related to the Obama administration?s claim of legal authority to order the killing of American citizens overseas.

US District Judge Colleen McMahon expressed frustration with the state of the law, complaining in a 75-page opinion that she faced a ?veritable Catch-22? in deciding whether the government could block public disclosure of legal memos justifying the president?s overseas kill operations.

?I can find no way around the thicket of laws and precedents that effectively allow the Executive Branch of our Government to proclaim as perfectly lawful certain actions that seem on their face incompatible with our Constitution and laws, while keeping the reasons for their conclusions secret,? Judge McMahon wrote.

At issue was whether the administration would be ordered under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to disclose to the public legal memos written by government lawyers defending the targeted killing of US citizens overseas who were suspected of involvement in terror operations.

?This Court is constrained by law, and under the law, I can only conclude that the Government has not violated FOIA by refusing to turn over the documents sought in the FOIA requests,? McMahon said.

She added that the government thus could not be ?compelled by this court of law to explain in detail the reasons why its actions do not violate the Constitution and laws of the United States.?

The judge continued: ?The Alice-in-Wonderland nature of this pronouncement is not lost on me; but after careful and extensive consideration, I find myself stuck in a paradoxical situation in which I cannot solve a problem because of contradictory constraints and rules.?

The FOIA lawsuits were filed in federal court in New York City on behalf of the American Civil Liberties Union and two reporters with The New York Times. Among other documents, they requested a copy of a memorandum prepared by the Justice Department?s Office of Legal Counsel.

That?s the same office during the Bush administration that prepared a series of memos that offered legal justifications for harsh interrogation tactics. Critics denounced the documents as the torture memos.

President Obama announced at the beginning of his first term that his administration would no longer engage in controversial interrogation techniques, such as waterboarding. But the administration has significantly expanded the use of unmanned drone aircraft to carry out lethal attacks ? including beyond the active war zone in Afghanistan.

Irish Newspaper Collective Wants to Charge License Fees for Links ...

NewspapersIMF4-230x150[1]It?s a fact of life that legacy industries are often killed off by newer industries spawned by new inventions, so the generally worsening situation of the newspaper industry should come as no surprise as more news moves online.

What does surprise me is that some in the industry seemed determined to speed up the process and hasten the deaths of their companies. I?ve just read that the National Newspapers of Ireland has adopted a new licensing scheme where they expect websites to pay to link to one of their members.

I?m not kidding. They?ve been sending out notices, demanding payment:

The Newspaper Industry (all these newspapers) had its agent write out demanding money. They wrote to Women?s Aid, (amongst others) who became our clients when they received letters, emails and phone calls asserting that they needed to buy a licence because they had linked to articles in newspapers carrying positive stories about their fundraising efforts.

Note that this is not paying for an excerpt, which is not that unreasonable, or some punitive measure for the copying of an entire article. No, the NNI wants to charge for links like this, this, or this.

For those 3 links, I now have to pay the NNI 300 euros. Seriously. Apparently this group of 15 newspapers is under the impression that merely mentioning an article on one of websites is not legal; they think it is copyright infringement.

Don?t hurt yourself trying to understand their reasoning; it?s utter nonsense. First and foremost, let?s consider the business aspect. There?s the fact that naming a work?s title does not and cannot be copyright infringement ? not under US law (I?m not familiar with Irish copyright law). A link (or the URL inside it) is little more than a name, so arguably the same rule would apply. And even if it is more than a name, the URL can be regarded as a factual statement (you can find the content here) and facts arguably cannot be copyrighted in the US (some courts disagree).

Crazy, no?

Unfortunately this is not the first time this insanity has appeared, though none have gone quite so nuts as the NNI. There?s an ongoing push in Germany to pass a law which would force Google to pay publishers for using the tiny snippets in Google?s search results, and Belgian newspapers recently settled a similar dispute with Google.? France is also considering a similar law.

What?s even better is that the Belgian settlement came after Google lost the court case, and complied with the judge?s order to delist the newspapers from the search engine. That of course cost the Belgian newspapers a lot of traffic and reducing their revenue.

And that, my dears, is the true crazyness about demanding payments for links and snippets. A link from one website to another is free advertising. It?s a source of page views which the recipient didn?t have to pay for.

One commenter on the source article put it into perspective:

By that same rational?.. Do the newspapers intend to pay for each link to an advertisers site that they host? Possibly ending up paying more for the traffic they drive to advertisers sites than they receive for hosting links in the first place? Surely they?re killing their own revenue model.

What we?re really talking about here is that these Irish newspapers want everyone else to pay for the privilege of giving the NNI member websites more traffic. That alone is enough to show what a nutty idea this is.
