Facebook Will Finally Resolve Rumors of the Fabled Facebook Phone on April 4

Cross your fingers, cross your legs. Cross your arms and bow your head. The seemingly never-ending rumor mill spinning around the idea of a Facebook phone may finally come to a stop next week. Or it may not.

The social network just sent out press invitations to an event at its 1 Hacker Way headquarters in exactly one week. "Come See Our New Home on Android," the invitation read. Based on that line and the most reliable details floating around the blogosphere, Zuck and company will finally give us a peek into the future of its mobile strategy. Whether that's an actual Facebook phone, a Facebook-built mobile operating system or just a new app, we won't know until April 4. That said, we've been waiting to find out for a solid 18 months.

Despite the company's consistent denial of the rather durable rumors of a Facebook phone, everyone seems to agree that this April 4 Android event will be a big deal. As TechCrunch points out, the event is a full hour longer than the last one! The blog's Josh Constine reports that "it will be a modified version of the Android operating system with deep native Facebook functionality that may live on an?HTC?handset." Constine adds, "It's said not to be a full-on rewrite of Android, but rather a 'flavor' that will have all sorts of extra Facebook functionality built in." The rest of the blog post reports that this detail or that detail "could" be true no less than seven times.

There's plenty to doubt about Constine's reading of the old Silicon Valley tea leaves. For one, Mark Zuckerberg and seemingly everybody else has denied the existence of a Facebook phone at one point or another. "We're not going to build a phone," Zuckerberg said on the company's latest earnings call. "It's not the right strategy for us to build one integrated system." But, those durable rumor mongers would say, he's not ruling out deep Facebook integration in an Android phone! No he's not. He's also not ruling out the possibility that Facebook would build a tablet or a laptop or a dirt bike or a hovercraft.?

The one thing that's certain about this April 4 event is that Facebook is going to make an Android-related announcement. It ought to provide some clarity in the company's mobile strategy and hopefully calm some of the breathless bloggers who are eager for the social network to get eye-to-eye with Apple. Past reporting from trustworthy sources does suggest that HTC will be involved, but we won't know until we know. Until then, Facebook fans, take it easy. The truth is out there, but boy is it elusive.

Canada GDP: Factories, hockey players, realtors fuelled tepid ...

OTTAWA ? Thank factory workers and hockey players for no-small economic favours.

FP0329-SECTOR-CONTRIBUTION.jpg

Canada began the new year with better-than-expected growth, supported by stronger manufacturing output and the return of National Hockey League games following a long labour dispute.

Adding to that, after three straight monthly declines, real estate agents and brokers were also back in play, although that could prove temporary.

Gross domestic product rose 0.2% in January, after contracting 0.2% in December and managing a 0.3% advance the month before that, Statistics Canada said Thursday. Most economists had expected an increase of just 0.1% GDP in January.

It was mostly manufacturing and a hockey lockout story

?It was mostly manufacturing and a hockey lockout story,? said Douglas Porter, chief economists at BMO Capital Markets.

Manufacturing rebounded with growth of 1.2% in the first month of 2013 ? accounting for about half of all of January?s output. That followed a see-saw performance in the last half of last year, which ended with a drop of 1.9% in December.

?We?ve started to see a little improvement in things like auto production and exports in recent months. And there are some signs the worst of the soft patch may be over in the Canadian economy,? Mr. Porter said.

The resumptions of NHL games after the player lockout boosted the arts, entertainment and recreation sector by 4.1% in January, pumping $441 million ? based on 2007 values used by Statistics Canada ? into the Canadian economy.

In the real estate market, meanwhile, output grew by 0.3% in January. Within that group, agents and brokers contributed 0.4% growth to the economy.

?I certainly wouldn?t hang my hat on the real estate sector leading us out of this,? Mr. Porter said.

?Where we can look for some support here is anything that?s levered to the U.S. economy, and manufacturing obviously fits that bill. And hockey, or course.?

Also Thursday, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development offered its assessment of Canada?s prospects, saying growth will be limited to 1.1% in the first three months of this year ? below forecasts for the U.S. and weaker than the average of all Group of Seven nations.

The Paris-based economic think-tank, however, said growth in Canada should pick up in the second quarter by as much as 1.9%.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said in his Budget 2013 that GDP would expand 1.6% for all of 2013. That is down from the minister?s previous estimate of 2% this year.

The budget forecasts growth of 2.5% next year, followed by 2.6% in 2015, before slowing to 2.4% in 2016.

Given the still-weak GDP growth, most economists do not expect the Bank of Canada to begin lifting its trendsetting interest rate from its current near-record low 1% until mid-2014.

Emanuella Enenajor, an economist at CIBC World Markets, said there is ?no need for the Bank of Canada to strengthen its barely-there bias for rate hikes.?

The bank will announced its next rate decision on April 17, along with its spring MPR economic and policy outlook.

Thomas Menino Retiring? Longtime Boston Mayor Will Not Seek 6th Term, Boston Globe Reports

BOSTON, March 27 (Reuters) - Boston Mayor Tom Menino, a Democrat who has run the city for almost two decades, will not seek a sixth term, the Boston Globe reported on its website Wednesday night.
Menino will announce his decision at a Thursday afternoon news conference, the newspaper said. Staff at the mayor's office could not be reached for immediate comment.
The 70-year-old mayor was hospitalized for a month last year for a virus and back pain that cut short an Italian vacation.
A decision not to seek re-election would set the stage for Boston's most competitive mayoral race since 1993, when Menino first won the office.
So far, only one candidate, city councilor John Connolly, has declared an intention to run, though observers said aspirants may have held off jumping into the race, waiting to see if Menino would seek re-election. (Reporting by Scott Malone; Editing by Philip Barbara)

HBT: Lohse to make Brewers debut on Thursday

Kyle Lohse is scheduled to start tomorrow against Rockies, making his Brewers debut just three days after agreeing to a three-year contract.

Normally pitchers ramp up slowly during spring training, building up arm strength with each start, but Lohse will only have time to make one Cactus League appearance before the season begins. However, while Scott Boras tried to find him work Lohse was throwing bullpen sessions and simulated games at the agent?s training complex, so he?s more or less fully stretched out.

Milwaukee forfeited the No. 17 pick in the draft to sign Lohse and will pay him $4 million this season, $11 million in each of 2014 and 2015, and $7 million in deferred payments from 2016-2018.
