Atlanta linebacker Curtis Lofton was fined $15,000 for unnecessary roughness for striking New Orleans wide receiver Marques Colston, deemed a defenseless player, in the head and neck area Monday night.

DOLPHINS: Running back Reggie Bush will miss the finale after hurting his right knee.

TEXANS: Wide receiver Andre Johnson will play against Tennessee after missing the last three games because of a strained left hamstring.

VIKINGS: Running back Adrian Peterson had surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee.

David Letterman's blackmailer gets gig on Paula Zahn show (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Robert "Joe" Halderman, the former CBS News producer who went to jail for trying to blackmail David Letterman, has secured a job at "On the Case with Paula Zahn," a weekly news magazine on the Investigation Discovery Channel.

TheWrap confirmed that Halderman has already started working with "On the Case," which investigates crime mysteries.

Scott Weinberger, a former deputy sheriff and investigative reporter, is the show's creator alongside Scott Sternberg. A Discovery spokesperson noted that Halderman works for Weinberger's company, Weinberger Media, rather than the network.

The current season ends next month, but Halderman has yet to appear in the credits, according to TVNewser, which broke the news.

Back in 2009, Halderman was a producer for "48 Hours" -- a show not unlike "On the case" -- when he approached Letterman with information he'd gathered regarding the late night-host's extramarital activities, which involved the news producer's girlfriend.

He threatened to go public with the information, which Letterman eventually did himself.

Halderman was sentenced to six months in jail in 2010, though he only served four months of the sentence.

Florida public broadcasters search for solutions to their funding dilemma

By Eric Deggans, Times TV/Media CriticTampa Bay Times
Posted: Dec 30, 2011 03:36 PM

At WUSF Public Media, they shut down a program to read periodicals for the blind, laid off two people and declined to replace two more.

At WEDU-Ch. 3, they've avoided fully replacing departing staffers and may drop programming from The Florida Channel.

And at bohemian-friendly Tampa community radio station WMNF-FM (88.5) ? which already announced a scrap metal drive to earn money ? there is another, even more unlikely fundraising project under development: a golf tournament, possibly at the tony Belleair Country Club.

This is the local legacy among area public broadcasters, after Gov. Rick Scott's decision in June to veto nearly $4.8-million in state funding for such outlets across Florida. Each public TV station lost more than $300,000; each radio station more than $60,000. Across the Tampa Bay area, WEDU, WMNF and WUSF radio and TV stations saw total losses of up to $1-million.

"There's no sugar daddy out there to replace the ($62,000) the governor took away from us. I wish the public would realize how dire the situation is," said Rob Lorei, WMNF's longtime news and public affairs director.

The cuts mirror a nationwide trend. Public broadcasters in 24 states, including Florida, have lost a combined $85-million in state aid since 2008, according to a study by the media watchdog group Free Press.

And while Tampa Bay area public broadcasting fans initially responded with a surge in donations, as the year wore on, local stations found themselves increasingly challenged to find new, permanent solutions to the funding dilemma.

The biggest irony may be that any success in finding new revenue may prove the governor's contention that they didn't need the money in the first place.

The cut amounted to 3 percent of WMNF's budget, strained enough by the economy already that it nearly implemented the first layoffs of its history last year. And while their first pledge drive after the cuts brought in more money, October's fundraising fell $30,000 short, indicating how short listeners' memories can be.

"The public, in times of emergency, comes through. Now they don't have that sense of urgency," said Lorei, noting WMNF has expanded the length of its fundraising drives, further disrupting regular programming.

Now the station is considering some usual fundraising moves, including the golf tournament in March and expanding something that has been a dirty word in the halls of WMNF for more than 30 years ? corporate sponsorship.

"Some people are very much against it, and others are saying 'let's have a look at this,' " said Mercedes Skelton, the station's interim station manager. "Our mission comes first. And if a corporation is aligned with that mission, that's just fine."

WEDU has seen its budget shrink from $11-million to $7-million since 2007, even as costs of purchasing programming from PBS have risen. And while fundraising totals in June were up 58 percent compared to 2010, the August/September drive brought only a 17 percent bump from the year before. The additional money still fell more than $200,000 short of replacing the $435,000 lost through the governor's veto.

Susan Howarth, WEDU general manager, said the state's public radio stations were surprised by Scott's veto of funds already made available by the GOP-controlled Legislature, even though his conservative stances on fiscal policy were known.

Asked for a strategy to replace the funding, beyond hoping the governor might change his mind, Howarth repeats the mantra of the statewide alliance of public broadcasters, the Florida Public Broadcasting Service: They need to tell their story better.

"We learned a lot of people don't understand the teacher training we provide, the educational materials, the emergency broadcast services," said Howarth, noting that the governor did not cut funding for The Florida Channel, which often simulcasts sessions of the Legislature like a state-centered C-SPAN, run by Tallahassee-based WFSU-TV.

To make way for programming that might draw funding, WEDU is considering dropping 12-hour broadcasts of The Florida Channel from its third digital TV channel, Howarth said. "In order to get that coverage of the Legislature out to citizens across the state, you pretty much need the local stations," she added. "I think there is a role for government funding of public broadcasting, just like there's a role for funding libraries."

Anger over $2.8-million in continued funding for The Florida Channel and a story-sharing network maintained by WFSU-TV and radio in Tallahassee called the Florida Public Radio Network led officials at WLRN Public Radio and Television in Miami to drop both services and start a new story-sharing system for the state's public broadcasters. Dubbed the Florida News Exchange, it uses newer media-sharing technology than FPRN.

But John LaBonia, WLRN's general manager, said he started the new service because of questions about the quality of reporting in material passed along the state-subsidized networks. "It's really about reporting ? the funding issue was just the last straw," he said. "When we had the governor on, we asked him three times why he defunded us."

At WUSF Public Media, which operates WUSF-Ch. 16, NPR/jazz outlet WUSF-FM (89.7) and classical music station WSMR-FM (89.1), the combined funding loss of more than $500,000 required cutbacks. Beyond the layoffs and shutting down its volunteer radio reading service, for example, they can produce local TV programming only when a separate grant pays for it.

A statewide health reporting project, started with a two-year grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, runs out of money in April. WUSF general manager JoAnn Urofsky said they have not figured out how or if they might continue the project.

Pledge drive results have been mixed, drawing slightly more money but slightly fewer members than targeted goals.

"When you look at the loss of $500,000, there's no way to replace it," Urofsky sasid. "All you can really do is eat into the plan you already have."

Microsoft Big Picture: Kinect stretches out

At the Sydney Big Picture event held by Microsoft,?one?thing that caught my attention was Kinect.

Microsoft Surface on display

Microsoft Surface on display

On show was a Sesame Street game (due for release next year) which is designed to be a full 45 minute episode with full two way interaction.

Designed to work work with the new Kinect voice add on (due December), this is one attempt to break out of the hard core gaming into other markets. Greg Morrison, Microsoft Partner Business Manager, also stated that they see Kinect?expanding into Business and Education markets.

Microsoft must have been watching the hacker community with interest, as they have embraced the Kinnect and have managed to mod the device for a wide viarity of use. It wil even fund startups who are working with the device (as per Slashdot).

There is also a SDK for Windows Kinect. While the gesture interface is not for everyone, the use for medicine, education,?engineering?and even corporate use is almost unlimited.

Also sighted was the Microsoft Surface. This revolutionary device may have been pushed to the background due to the tablet explosion, it is still a great experimental device, bring touch to a larger screen. On display was a travel guide software, and the use of 256bit tags (under plastic figurines) being used to influence the on screen data.

Samsung?is releasing a Surface unit (no pricing details), however do not expect Surface to replace your iPad or Windows Laptop just yet.

The Big Picture in Sydney has a lot of ?environments? or use cases for its products. Much of the content is in the server and corporate?environment, with some focus on Xbox, more in media delivery and with the Konnect, and a?surprisingly lack of games. Given that Xbox is the best youth focus brand it has, I would expect more, however, there are a few Windows 7 Phone displays here, indicating they may want to expand the Xbox loyalty to phone and PC.

Two Women, One Pregnant, Throw Down at Occupy Nashville Protest

On Christmas, two protesters at an Occupy Nashville encampment proved that while they may decry the way the 1% bludgeons us commoners in a manner of speaking, they still reserve the right to literally pummel one another.

The two women - one of them three months pregnant - exchanged harsh words, which quickly led to hair pulling, punching, and both of them landing on the ground.

Iran Reacts To Sanctions Threat With One Of Its Own: Block Oil Exports Through Hormuz Strait

"If they [the west] impose sanctions on Iran's oil exports, then even one drop of oil cannot flow from the strait of Hormuz," the official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Iran's first vice-president, Mohammad Reza Rahimi, as saying.

E.U. ministers said on December 1 that a decision on further sanctions would be taken no later than their January meeting. E.U. countries take 450,000 barrels a day of Iranian oil, about 18% of its exports.

China, the biggest buyer of Iranian crude, has warned against "emotionally charged actions" that might aggravate tension in the nuclear standoff with Iran.

Russia for its part has warned against "cranking up a spiral of tension", saying this would undermine the chances of Iran co-operating with efforts to ensure it does not build atomic bombs.

About a third of all sea-borne oil was shipped through the strait of Hormuz in 2009, and U.S. warships patrol the area to ensure safe passage.

Most of the crude exported from Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq must slip through the strait, a four-mile wide shipping channel between Oman and Iran.

Some analysts say Iran would think hard about sealing off the strait as it could suffer just as much economically as western crude importers.

Industry sources said Saudi Arabia and other Gulf OPEC states were ready to replace Iranian oil if further sanctions halted Iranian crude exports to Europe.

Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi had said that Saudi Arabia had promised not to replace Iranian crude if sanctions were imposed.

"No promise was made to Iran, it's very unlikely that Saudi Arabia would not fill a demand gap if sanctions are placed," said an industry source familiar with the matter.

Gulf delegates from OPEC said an Iranian threat to close the strait would harm Tehran as well as the major regional producers that also use the world's most vital oil export channel.

"If the sanctions take place the price of oil in Europe would increase and Saudi and other Gulf countries would start selling there to fill the gap and also benefit from the higher price," said an industry source, who declined to be named.

Brent crude oil futures jumped nearly a dollar to over $109 a barrel after the Iranian threat, but a Gulf OPEC delegate said the effect could be temporary.

"For now, any move in the oil price is short-term, as I don't see Iran actually going ahead with the threat," said the delegate.

(AP) ? For "Anybody but Romney" Republicans in a key conservative region of Ohio, Newt Gingrich has been picking up support as an alternative to the former Massachusetts governor.

The former House speaker has moved to the top in recent polling in Ohio, just as Republican presidential candidates prepare for the Jan. 3 caucuses in Iowa, followed closely by the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries. Ohio's presidential primary is scheduled for March 6, one of the biggest prizes for Republicans among about a dozen states voting on "Super Tuesday."

Mitt Romney hasn't excited some of the party's staunchest conservatives for reasons that include his past support of abortion rights and enactment of a Massachusetts health care plan that's often compared to President Barack Obama's overhaul.

Some conservatives had flirted with supporting Herman Cain, drawn to his business background and unconventional campaign style. But Cain suspended his campaign this month following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior and a longtime extramarital affair. Cain's decision and Gingrich's performance in nationally televised debates helped some make up their minds.

"He's sold me," said Dan Keith, 61, of Hamilton. Keith and his wife, Pat, said they are convinced that Gingrich has the experience and savvy to be strong against Obama. "I can't see anybody else coming onto the scene that we would go to."

The Keiths said they were undecided when first interviewed three months ago.

"I think before, people liked the other candidates because they were an alternative to Romney. But I'm hearing more people who like Gingrich as Gingrich," said Bill Langdon, co-owner of the Grand Ole Pub, a popular gathering spot for Republican partisans in West Chester. Langdon had been interested in Cain, but doubted whether Cain could win the presidential nomination.

Gingrich is now his choice. "He's the guy they think can go toe-to-toe with the president," Langdon said.

Sandra Arno, of nearby Springdale, turned out for Cain's visit to West Chester in November and liked what she heard. She was deciding between him and Gingrich before Cain stopped campaigning, and most recently was leaning toward the former speaker.

"I think they're both very intelligent, and I think Newt will be good as the candidate," Arno said.

Republican-dominated suburbs like this one ? home of House Speaker John Boehner ? just north of Cincinnati provide a stronghold of votes in a state that no GOP nominee has ever reached the White House without winning. Their enthusiastic turnout to vote for George W. Bush by 2-to-1 margins in 2004 is credited with delivering Ohio to clinch his re-election. It's important for the Republican nominee to be able to attract big numbers in GOP-oriented suburban and rural regions to offset Democratic urban bastions led by Cleveland.

A series of Quinnipiac University polls tracked Gingrich's rise in Ohio from low single-digits to 36 percent between September and early December. Cain had fallen to 7 percent after leading the pack at 28 percent in October. The sexual harassment allegations against Cain surfaced in late October.

Lori Viars, a conservative activist and anti-abortion leader in Lebanon, predicted that a Romney nomination would keep some Christian evangelicals on the sidelines in November because of concern about his previous positions on issues, led by abortion. Some in her crowd ? Viars is among them ? might also hesitate over Gingrich's personal history, which includes two divorces and acknowledged marital infidelity.

"Newt makes a lot of sense," Viars said. "But everyone makes mistakes, and he certainly is right on a lot of issues."

Several of those who have come around to Gingrich say they're not put off by his personal past.

"Would I want him as marriage counselor? No," said Keith. "But that's not what we're electing."

Keith's wife thinks Gingrich's candidacy is on firmer ground because he's already undergone years of scrutiny.

"They've already raked him over the coals pretty good," Pat Keith said.

Other Republican activists say it's still too soon to pick a candidate in a state where there has been little campaigning, and with the GOP field likely to be smaller by the time of Ohio's primary in March.

This region of Ohio is home to some of the nation's first tea party groups, and a number of activists are loyal to Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who has attracted a band of followers with libertarian-minded calls to bring home U.S. troops and keep the government out of personal decisions.

Cincinnati tea party leader Mike Wilson, though, is "watching and waiting."

Wilson's favorite candidate was Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor who dropped out in August. Wilson doesn't share the worry about Romney becoming the nominee. He also said a respectable Iowa finish by Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann or Texas Gov. Rick Perry could give either of those conservative favorites some traction heading into the contests that follow.

Wilson said Romney can defeat Obama and would work with a Republican-controlled House, should it stay in GOP hands.

"I think we know who the ultimate opponent is ? Barack Obama," Wilson said. "With John Boehner as speaker, I think Romney will sign a lot of Republican legislation over the next four years."

Iraq agrees to move Iran exiles; rockets hit camp (AP)

BAGHDAD ? The United Nations and the Iraqi government agreed to relocate several thousand Iranian exiles living in a camp in northeastern Iraq, potentially averting a showdown with its residents. The dissidents, who have not said whether they would agree to move, reported a rocket attack on the camp.

The People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, one-time allies of Saddam Hussein in a common fight against Iran, said Katyusha rockets struck near housing units inside the camp on Sunday night, but did not report any casualties.

A representative of the camp's residents said Monday they were still waiting to see the agreement before commenting on whether they would decide to relocate or not.

"We hope that it would officially include the minimum assurances so that it would be acceptable to Ashraf residents," said Shahin Gobadi. "Ashraf residents have repeatedly emphasized that they would in no way accept forcible relocation."

Since Saddam's overthrow, Iraq's new leaders have improved relations with Iran and have sought to shut down the camp, home to 3,400 residents and located in barren terrain northeast of Baghdad about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Iranian border. The U.N. reported that at least 34 people were killed in a raid by Iraqi government forces in April.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq announced an agreement Sunday night that establishes a process to move the residents of Camp Ashraf to a temporary location. It did not give a timeline for the move or specify the new location.

A statement from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the residents would be moved to Camp Liberty, a former U.S. military base near the Baghdad International Airport.

At Camp Liberty, the U.N.'s refugee agency will interview the residents to determine their eligibility to get refugee status, before they can eventually be resettled in third countries, Clinton said.

"We are encouraged by the Iraqi government's willingness to commit to this plan, and expect it to fulfill all its responsibilities," she said in the statement. "To be successful, this resettlement must also have the full support of the camp's residents, and we urge them to work with the U.N. to implement this relocation."

The People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran first moved to Camp Ashraf during the regime of Saddam, who saw the group as a convenient ally against Tehran. The group is committed to the overthrow of the Iranian regime.

The group carried out a series of bombings and assassinations against Iran's clerical regime in the 1980s and fought alongside Saddam's forces in the Iran-Iraq war. But the group says it renounced violence in 2001. U.S. soldiers disarmed them during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been determined to close down the camp by the end of December. His government considers the camp as an affront to Iraq's sovereignty.

Last week, an Iraqi government spokesman said the government was working out a solution to the situation at Camp Ashraf with the U.N. and would allow the camp to stay open into January as residents are being relocated. At the time, representatives of the residents suggested they would be willing to move, as long as their security was provided for.

Under the agreement outlined by the U.N., the international organization will monitor the relocation process and then a team from the U.N.'s refugee agency will be deployed at the new location to process the refugee claims.

Officials from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad will also visit regularly, the State Department said.

The Iraqi government will be responsible for the exiles' safety during that time, and will have a liaison officer from the Ministry of Human Rights involved in the relocation, the U.N. said.

"I would like to highlight that the government is exclusively responsible for the safety and security of the residents both during their transfer and in the new location until they leave the country," said Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq.

The Iraqi government's vow to close Camp Ashraf had raised concerns that forcibly removing its residents would result in violence.

The People's Mujahedeen has been branded a foreign terrorist organization by the United States, a designation now under review by the State Department. It has been removed from similar blacklists in Europe.

Icebreaker reaches stricken Russian fishing vessel (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? A South Korean polar research ship on Monday reached a leaking Russian fishing vessel that has been stuck in the frigid waters off Antarctica for the past 10 days, New Zealand officials said.

The Sparta, with 32 crew on board, hit underwater ice on Dec. 16 that tore a 1-foot (30-centimeter) hole in its hull and caused it to list at 13 degrees. Several rescue ships had been hampered by heavy ice in the Ross Sea off the northern Antarctica coast before the icebreaker Araon finally pushed through and reached the Sparta on Monday, New Zealand Rescue Coordination Center spokeswoman Rosalie Neilson said.

The arrival was a relief to the crew, which had been desperately pumping out near-frozen sea water while awaiting rescue. At one point, more than half of those on board were forced onto life rafts.

The crew is made up of 15 Russians, 16 Indonesians and one Ukrainian.

A New Zealand air force cargo plane had previously made two parachute drops of pumps and hull patching gear that had helped keep the single-hulled Sparta from sinking.

Search and rescue coordinator Mike Roberts said the South Korean vessel was alongside Sparta transferring fuel to it to change its trim ? or how it's sitting in the water ? so the bow rises clear of the sea, exposing the damaged area of hull.

Roberts said crew from both ships will attempt to weld a "doubler plate" over the hole ? one external and a second inside. If successful, the repair is expected to make Sparta seaworthy, and should enable it to be escorted by Araon out of the sea ice to open water, he said in a statement. Roberts did not say how long the repair attempt was expected to take.

Weather in the area was calm, which should help the repair operation, he said.

The survival drama on the edge of the Antarctic ice shelf is taking place about 2,200 miles (3,700 kilometers) southeast of New Zealand.

California University Fencing

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with university fencing clubs here in California. I'm majoring in civil engineering at this point (community college, transferring for BS), and the two top schools I'm looking at that are listed as having a fencing club are Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Davis. Transferring is still a ways off, but I'm wondering which I should be shooting for, and fencing is a factor (albeit, not my main concern). Just trying to get information at this point.

I was curious if anyone here had experience with California university fencing clubs, particularly either of these two. I'm not necessarily heavily interested in competing, just a good place to fence. Obviously, I'd highly prefer saber, but ultimately education is more important and I'd be willing to pick up another weapon to continue fencing while going to the school of my choice. I used to know the saber coach at Davis, but I believe he is no longer there.

Any insights or experience would be appreciated.

Area Organization Helps Cancer Patients With Bills This Holiday Season

By Brad Segall

WAYNE, Pa. (CBS) ? The holidays can be a tough time for families dealing with debilitating illnesses so a Delaware Valley non-profit organization is doing what it can to brighten things up just a bit.

Forty families in the tri-state area are on the receiving end of the generosity of the Great Guys Group, a Wayne-based organization that helps families battling cancer. This weekend they are delivering presents to six families and earlier this week they paid the bills for another three dozen families. Paul Isenberg is the CEO and co-founder.

?People are blown away that somebody who doesn?t even know them valued them and treats them as family and there?s a great appreciation,? said Isenberg.

He says the organization raises money throughout the year to pay the mortgage, rent, utilities and other critical bills that help keep families in their homes. Isenberg has seen it first-hand. His first wife died after a long bout with the disease. He says cancer kills and it can bankrupt families.

FBI shooting range is popular deer hangout

(AP) ? Call it a playground for Bambi and G-Men, where imaginary criminals are hunted and deer are the spectators.

The 547-acre FBI Academy, where some of the nation's best marksmen fire off more than 1 million bullets every month, happens to be one of the safest places for deer during hunting season.

The property on the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., is home to some of the FBI's most elite forces and training programs as well as a de facto wildlife refuge where deer, fox, wild turkeys, groundhogs and vultures roam fearless and free.

In recent years, a black bear was spotted running across a parking lot, and a groundhog cornered an FBI agent coming out of the cafeteria, hoping to score some human food, FBI spokesman Kurt Crawford said. Turkey vultures are often seen perched atop the 500,000-square-foot national crime lab where the FBI analyzes evidence, including the remains of the former al-Qaida leader in Iraq.

The wild animals are as much a fixture at the academy as the hostage rescue team and criminal profilers.

The most common furry friends on the sprawling campus some 30 miles outside Washington are the deer, a regular at the shooting ranges, driving courses and physical training trails.

On a December afternoon, deer grazed above one of the academy's 16 practice shooting ranges. They stood just 15 feet away from the paper targets. Nearby, shots popped loudly from a Colt M4 Carbine rifle, and the white-tailed deer did not flinch.

"They're pretty immune to the sound," said Sean Boyle, supervisory special agent bomb technician and principal firearms instructor for the Critical Incident Response Group based at the academy. The deer typically graze on top of the berm, about 15 feet away from the targets and rarely go directly in the line of fire. Boyle said he doesn't recall an instance where a deer was shot accidentally.

"It's like they think, 'We've pushed the limit for this far, and all our generations have pushed the limit for this far,'" Boyle said. "They're just so docile around here. They don't know what a gun is."

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries does not keep direct tabs on the deer population at the FBI academy, but a spokeswoman said statewide the deer population has remained about the same over the past decade, partly because of regulated hunting. Licensed deer hunters are allowed on parts of the Marine Corps base but not at the academy where the FBI does not hunt its animals.

At the FBI Academy, the deer have even become part of the training in some of the driving courses, said Tim Moles, the supervisory special agent who oversees the Tactical and Emergency Vehicle Operations Center, where recruits learn to avoid crashing their cars and conduct surveillance without being spotted. The deer are convenient when recruits learn to avoid collisions, Moles said. "There's times when it seems like they're playing chicken with us," Moles said. "We respect them because they can do damage. We'd rather avoid all deer stories in this end of the academy."

For the most part, the deer have stayed out of trouble. Twice, however, deer have eaten freshly-planted pansies at the academy's 9/11 memorial courtyard, Crawford said. Eventually a fence was built to keep the flowers off limits.

Deer have been known to interrupt physical training, too.

"We've had the deer walk across the middle of the track during the 300-meter sprint," said Susann Dreiling, unit chief of the academy's physical training unit.

To become an agent, recruits must pass a physical fitness test. They are scored on how fast they can run and how many push-ups and sit-ups they perform. Sometimes, training will involve running a quarter-mile path along the lake area of the academy, stopping for push-ups, running some more and breaking to box, Dreiling said.

During these exercises, a mother and her fawns are often close by.

"They just stand there and watch as if they're evaluating them," Dreiling said, "just like the instructors are."

Mathematics in Ancient Africa

Rarely do historians discuss mathematics in Africa, and when they do, they only discuss it in Egypt and Northern Africa.

However, the oldest mathematical objects in the world have been found in sub-Saharan?Africa.?

The picture is of Ishango bones. They were found near Lake Edward on the borders of Uganda and Zaire and are estimated to be 25,000 years old.

At one end of the Ishango Bone is a piece of quartz for writing, and the bone has a series of notches carved in groups (shown above). It was first thought these notches were some kind of tally marks as found to record counts all over the world. However, the Ishango bone appears to be much more than a simple tally. The markings on rows (a) and (b) each add to 60. Row (b) contains the prime numbers between 10 and 20. Row (a) is quite consistent with a numeration system based on 10, since the notches are grouped as 20 + 1, 20 - 1, 10 + 1, and 10 - 1. Finally, row (c) seems to illustrate for the method of duplication (multiplication by 2) used more recently in?Egyptian multiplication. Recent studies with microscopes illustrate more markings and it is now understood the bone is also a lunar phase counter. Who but a woman keeping track of her cycles would need a lunar calendar? Were women our first mathematicians?

Considering that I?ve heard an argument that women were the first?agriculturists/farmers because men were out hunting, I think, because of the same reason, it is reasonable to assume that women created this tool.

Act as if You're Being Filmed at Work [Video]

Act as if You're Being Filmed at Work Most of us have seen the YouTube video of a FedEx driver throwing a computer monitor over a fence. This driver will probably be facing pretty stiff disciplinary action. If he had acted as though he knew he was being recorded he might have done his best to gently place the package over the fence. The resulting video would not have gone viral and the driver might now be up for a raise instead of a reprimand.

Personal Finance weblog The Simple Dollar points out that most of us are fortunate enough not to have our worst days at work broadcast over the internet, but the best way to establish a career reputation is to always behave at work as though you're being recorded. This will keep you from taking shortcuts and doing things like throwing away a stack of paperwork rather than dealing with it. Video by goobie55

No. 22 Southern Miss tops Nevada in Hawaii Bowl (AP)

HONOLULU ? Austin Davis threw two touchdowns, including a 4-yarder late in the game, and No. 22 Southern Mississippi earned a school-record 12th victory by holding off Nevada 24-17 in the Hawaii Bowl on Saturday night.

Davis overcame a shaky start for the Conference USA champion Golden Eagles (12-2), and the defense in the second half managed to shut down Nevada's potent pistol attack led by Lampford Mark.

Davis was off most of the night but made it count on the game-winning drive. On third-and-goal, he scrambled right and found Kelvin Bolden for the 4-yard score, capping a seven-play, 68-yard drive. He had just 59 yard passing at halftime and finished 18 of 41 for 165 yards.

On the winning drive, Davis was 3 of 4 for 66 yards, including a 43-yard completion to Dominique Sullivan down the right sideline and a 19-yarder to a crossing William Spight. Sullivan had five catches for 75 yards.

With Davis held in check, the Golden Eagles relied on their defense, stopping Mark on fourth-and-1 at midfield with 3:56 left. Mark had 183 yards rushing for the Wolf Pack (7-6) but was held to just 21 yards in the second half.

Cody Fajardo was 8 of 19 for 60 yards for Nevada. He also was held to just 14 yards rushing on nine carries before being replaced by Tyler Lantrip.

It was the final game for Southern Miss under coach Larry Fedora, who is leaving after four seasons to take over at North Carolina. The Golden Eagles got another big win after capturing their fifth C-USA title by upsetting previously unbeaten Houston 49-28 in the conference championship game. This was the first 10-win season for Southern Miss since 1988.

Nevada tied the game 17-17 late in the third quarter on a 37-yard field goal by Allen Hardison, taking advantage of a miscue by Southern Miss. Lampley waved for a fair catch on a punt and was run into by teammate Alex Smith. The ball bounced off Lampley's left leg and Nevada's Brandon Marshall recovered on the Southern Miss 14, leading to the field goal.

Just as Nevada seemed to take control of the game, Southern Miss scored 10 points in the final 1 1/2 minutes of the first half to take a 17-14 lead into the break.

Mark's 45-yard run gave the Wolf Pack a 14-7 lead with about 5 minutes left in the half, and Nevada took the ball right back on the ensuing kickoff.

Lorenzo Devers returned the kickoff 61 yards and appeared to be heading for a touchdown. After shedding the kicker, Devers was stripped from behind by Khalid Wooten and Thaddeus Brown returned it 16 yards to the Nevada 36.

But the team from Reno gambled and ended up turning it over on downs on its own 45 when Mark was stopped short on fourth-and-1. That led to a 48-yard field goal by Hrappman with 1:21 left in the half.

On the kickoff, Wooten fumbled and Southern Mississippi's Emmanuel Johnson recovered at the Nevada 24. Seven plays later, Davis threw a 2-yard pass to Lampley in the back of the end zone for the go-ahead score. A brief scuffle broke out between some of the players after the catch, but no one was ejected.

With both teams struggling to get going, special teams got the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard from a blocked punt by Tim Green early in the second quarter.

Green burst through the middle and leaped in the air, getting his hand on the ball as he flipped over a blocker. Tray Becton-Martin then dropped on the ball in the end zone, giving the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead. Tray Becton-Martin is the 25th different player to score for the Golden Eagles this year, which leads the nation.

Nevada answered with a 5-yard touchdown run by Mark, who had a 25-yard scamper to begin the 81-yard drive. Mark had 41 yards rushing on the drive, giving him 112 yards and his sixth-straight game with 100 or more.

Both teams blew good scoring opportunities in the first quarter.

Mark burst up the middle for 43 yards and was chased down from behind by Presley, getting Nevada inside the red zone. But Cody Fajardo's pass on third down was tipped and intercepted in the end zone by Jacorius Cotton.

SB Nation: 25 Most important people of NBA season

We take a stab at guessing which 25 basketball personalities will have the biggest impact on the shortened NBA season. Players like LeBron James, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul are obvious, but who else will make a statement in 2011-12?

Dec 23, 2011 - In any sport, there are a number of players, coaches and personalities that decide the outcome and narrative of a season. This is especially true in the NBA, where fans follow the personalities more than they follow the teams.

Predicting which people end up swinging the trajectory of a season isn't easy. Who had Tyson Chandler as the X-factor for a champion when the season began? Who had Danny Ainge breaking up the Ubuntu Celtics? Who had Derrick Rose winning the MVP, except Derrick Rose? Still, we're going to give it a shot. If you thought being wrong would stop us, you obviously don't know us.

Here are the 25 people we expect to be the most involved in deciding how this shortened NBA season plays out.

RISING STARS

Three young players poised to burst onto the scene.

25.? Ricky Rubio

24.? Kyrie Irving

23.? John Wall

These are three young point guards poised to become stars this season, but all have different obstacles to overcome. For Rubio, it's the weight of expectations, as well as his own issues as a scoring threat. His passing is great, but he has to prove he can hit a jump shot and finish himself at the rim to keep the defense honest. For Irving, it's the weight of carrying a downtrodden franchise on his shoulders, even though the talent around him is subpar. Finally, Wall must find a way to capitalize on his summer-league breakout and bring his inconsistent Wizards teammates with him. It would be easy for Wall to leave his straggling mates behind, but he must find a way to balance being himself and enhancing all of their games.

COACHES WITH A LOT TO PROVE

Three coaches with unique sets of challenges during a shortened season.

22.? Doc Rivers

21.? Erik Spoelstra

20.? Scott Brooks

These are the three coaches (out of four, and we'll get to the fourth later) who have the most difficult jobs this season. Rivers, having been handed a five-year extension after rumors that he would leave the coaching field entirely, has to coax one more year out of an aging core with less depth and less mercy from the schedule than ever before. Brooks has to find a way to develop a more complex offense so he isn't leaving his two superstars out to dry when tough, physical defenders arrive in the playoffs. Spoelstra? Let's just say nobody in South Beach is going to be happy if Miami Thrice comes up short yet again.

BROOKLYN NETS INTERLUDE

The New Jersey Nets' situation deserves its own section.

19.? Billy King

18.? Deron Williams

Deron Williams is going to be a free agent after this season. He's repeated his stance on what he might do next summer a hundred times: give me a winning roster, and I'll stay. So far, his general manager, Billy King, hasn't delivered. The Nets were in the chase for LeBron James; they lost. The Nets were in the chase for Carmelo Anthony; they lost. They got Williams, but took the enormous risk of acquiring him without any guarantee he would stay long term. Now, they're in the chase for Dwight Howard, and their top remaining trade asset is out for 4-6 weeks with an injury.

The clock is ticking on the Nets to do something. If King can pull it off, Williams stays and a powerhouse is born. If not? You can bet it'll be Williams that leaves.

THE X-FACTORS

Five supporting players who will swing the fates of title contenders

17.? Tim Duncan

16.? Rudy Gay

15.? Tyson Chandler

14.? Lamar Odom

13.? Russell Westbrook

The title hopes of five contenders rest on these supporting players. In order:

  • Duncan needs to find the fountain of youth, somehow. After a regular-season where the Spurs rested him to save his legs for the playoffs, Duncan didn't deliver, getting manhandled inside by Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. What happens this year? Did the extended time off allow Duncan to refuel, or will the condensed schedule be the end of him? San Antonio has no chance of winning another title if Duncan has nothing left.
  • Gay has to build on the potential he showed at the beginning of last year, when he finally started playing like a complete player instead of someone who just jacked shots. Then, he got hurt and the Grizzlies went on a late-season run without him. Can Gay get back to what he was before the injury? Can he lift the Grizzlies to even greater heights while fitting in to the culture that developed with him sidelined?
  • Chandler left a title team to try to bring some defense to a Knicks team that didn't have it last year. Is his presence alone enough to make the Knicks passable on that end, or will all the other defensive liabilities still be an issue. If the answer is the former, watch out for New York.
  • On the other hand, the Mavericks will need Odom to add a new dimension to their offense, or at least enough of one to make up for the defensive impact of Chandler. It's been so long since Odom has been anywhere but the Triangle offense. How will he fit in with Dirk Nowitzki and company?
  • Which Westbrook will we be getting this year? The one that emerged as a star during the regular season, or the one who looked off his teammates and forced shots in the playoffs? The Thunder strongly believe it's the former, but if it's the latter, there may be some trouble in paradise.

OWNERS DIVISION

One owner who made a lot of noise, and one owner who will be the subject of lots of noise.

12.? Mark Cuban

11.? Donald Sterling

Not only is Cuban the owner of the defending NBA champion, but he also has publicly said that commissioner David Stern was right to veto the Chris Paul trade to the Lakers. One day later, Cuban's Mavericks benefited by acquiring Odom for a trade exception. Speaking of owners inexplicably benefiting from Stern's heavy-handedness, Sterling was the beneficiary of Stern's veto, securing Paul for himself. That means that Stern went out of his way to help Donald Sterling. This point will be repeated by writers (correctly) 50,000 times this year.

THE GOLDEN BOYS

The faces of the league, back for an encore performance

10. Blake Griffin

9.? Derrick Rose

8.? Kevin Durant

7.? Dirk Nowitzki

Will Griffin develop his offensive game to go along with the many easy baskets he'll score courtesy of Chris Paul? Can Rose and the Bulls take the next step in the playoffs? Can Durant develop his post game and become a better off-ball scorer after the Mavericks and Grizzlies took a lot of his scoring opportunities away in the playoffs? Will Nowitzki add a scissor-kick fadeaway to his arsenal? All major questions for the four men who will be held up by the casual fan as all that's right with the league

DRAMA CITY

The madness with the Lakers always deserves its own category

6.? Mike Brown

5.? Kobe Bryant

Yeah, this one's going to be fun.

THE PAWNS AND THE KING

The two big names that tried to find new destinations and the man who did far too much to control the eventual fate of one of them.

4.? Chris Paul

3.? Dwight Howard

2.? David Stern

There have been millions of pixels generated already about the No. 4 man on this list, and there will be millions of pixels generated by the No. 3 man on this list when this season is all said and done. There have been billions and billions of pixels generated by the No. 2 man on this list for billions and billions of reasons. Let's just leave it at that and let the pixels come from elsewhere.

THE OBVIOUS ANSWER

Really, it's all about this guy.

1.? LeBron James??

A five-month lockout, a three-week trade saga for one superstar that ended in stunning fashion and the eventual conclusion of a trade saga for another superstar has caused us to forget how last season ended. Remember when LeBron James came up small in the NBA Finals? Remember when all your friends came up with incredibly lame jokes about James and the fourth quarter? Now is James' chance to respond with his play on the court.

This is the pivot point of James' career, even moreso than his move to Miami. There are no more forces out there to blame. We can no longer blame James' postseason failures on his poor supporting casts. The only way James can silence his critics is for his team to win the 2012 NBA title. Either way, his legacy will be forever altered by what happens this season. When it's all said and done, that storyline will once again dominate the NBA headlines.

France votes on punishment in new genocide law (AP)

PARIS ? Lawmakers vote on Thursday on a measure that would make it a crime in France to deny that a mass killings of Armenians in 1915 amounted to a genocide, a measure that could put France on a collision course with Turkey, a strategic ally and trading partner which says the conflict nearly 100 years ago should be left to historians.

France formally recognized the killings as genocide in 2001, but provided no penalty for anyone denying that. The bill sets a punishment of up to one year in prison and a fine of euro45,000 ($59,000) for those who deny or "outrageously minimize" the killings by Ottoman Turks, putting such action on a par with denial of the Holocaust.

The conservative government has indicated it backs the measure despite the ire ? and threats ? of Turkey. The measure is expected to easily pass in the National Assembly, the lower house ? though its fate in the Senate is less clear.

An initial bid to punish denial of the Armenian genocide failed earlier this year, killed by the Senate ? five years after it was passed by the lower house.

Turkey, which vehemently rejects the term "genocide," has campaigned to get France to abandon the legislation, threatening to withdraw its ambassador and warning of "grave consequences" to economic and political ties.

French authorities have stressed the importance of bilateral ties with Turkey and the key role it plays in sensitive strategic issues as a member of NATO, in Syria, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

However, President Nicolas Sarkozy has long opposed the entry into the European Union of mostly Muslim Turkey, putting a constant strain on the two nations' ties.

Turkey says that with the measure France, the cradle of human rights, will be tampering with freedom of expression by denying people the right to say what they think. Turkish authorities attribute the action to a bid by Sarkozy's party for short-term political gains ahead of spring presidential and legislative elections.

Turkish authorities have weighed in with caustic remarks about France's past, with Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan recalling its colonial history in Algeria and a 1945 massacre there, as well as its role in Rwanda where some have claimed a French role in the 1994 genocide there.

"Those who do want to see genocide should turn around and look at their own dirty and bloody history," Erdogan said last weekend. "Turkey will stand against this intentional, malicious, unjust and illegal attempt through all kinds of diplomatic means."

Turkish President Abdullah Gul spoke out on the issue this week, saying it will "put France in a position of a country that does not respect freedom of expression and does not allow objective scientific research."

Turkey insists the mass killings of Armenians ? up to 1.5 million, historians estimate ? occurred during civil unrest as the Ottoman Empire collapsed, with losses on both sides. Historians contend the Armenians were massacred in the first genocide of the 20th century.

France is pressing Turkey to own up to its history for the sake of "memory" just as the French have officially recognized the role of the state, the collaborationist Vichy government, in the deportation of Jews to Nazi death camps during World War II.

In October, Sarkozy made a visit to Armenia and from its capital, Yerevan, urged Turkey to recognize the 1915 killings as genocide.

"Turkey, which is a great country, would honor itself by revisiting its history like other countries in the world have done," Sarkozy said.

Still, France has worked to soften the diplomatic impact of the bill. Government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse reiterated on Wednesday that the move applies to all genocides and is not specifically about the Armenian killings. However, she added that the government views the text as "the reaffirmation of a universal principle which is that each nation must ... have the courage to review its memory and look at its history with lucidity."

France took its own time recognizing the state's role in the Holocaust. It was not until 1995 that a French leader, then-President Jacques Chirac proclaimed France's active role in sending its citizens to death camps. And it was only in 2009 that his historic declaration was formally recognized in a ruling by France's top body, the Council of State.

Committee of advisers may help Kim Jong Un (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? A South Korean lawmaker says intelligence officials are predicting a committee will handle key affairs until the twenty-something son of late leader Kim Jong Il formally becomes leader.

Hwang Jin-ha said Wednesday the National Intelligence Service made the assessment during a closed-door briefing. He says it believes the committee will be headed by the North Korean Workers' Party military commission.

Kim's third son and heir Kim Jong Un is a vice chairman of that commission.

Hwang says the intelligence service predicted Kim's aunt Kim Kyong Hui and her husband, Jang Song Thaek, a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, will play larger roles in supporting the younger Kim.

Hwang says the intelligence service didn't say how it got the information.
