U.K. Bans Two Retouched Makeup Ads For Being 'Misleading' (Time.com)

A British advertising watchdog is cracking down on two L'Oreal foundation ads after a Liberal Democrat MP, Jo Swinson, complained that they pass off airbrushing as makeup results. Swinson, who's known for crusading against advertisers who portray unrealistic and "misleading" images of women, has brought complaints against a Julia Roberts Lanc?me ad and a Christy Turlington Maybelline ad (both Lanc?me and Maybelline are owned by L'Oreal) to the Advertising Standards Authority, reports the Guardian.

Her issue? The ads are purporting the effects of make-up, when in reality they're showcasing the effects of Photoshop. "Pictures of flawless skin and super-slim bodies are all around, but they don't reflect reality," Swinson told the Guardian. "Excessive airbrushing and digital manipulation techniques have become the norm."

Guy Parker, chief executive of the ASA, told the BBC, "if advertisers go too far in using airbrushing and other post-production techniques to alter the appearance of models and it's likely to mislead people, then that's wrong and we'll stop the ads."

The BBC reports that when the ASA took the complaints to L'Oreal and requested to see the untouched images for comparison, the cosmetics company refused. Since the company failed to come up with the before shots, which is a requirement for make-up advertisers, the ASA had no other choice but to ban the ads. Meanwhile, we have no other choice but to wonder: just how bad were the before shots?

The Utah woman, who was kidnapped, raped and held captive at age 14 by a Salt Lake City street preacher, serves as a commentator for ABC News focusing on missing persons and child abduction cases.

The 23-year-old Smart told the Washington, D.C., newspaper The Hill on Wednesday that the media plays a key role in missing persons cases. She says she might not have been rescued without the media spotlight.

IMF warns on US debt as Obama, lawmakers struggle for deal (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? President Barack Obama and top lawmakers groped Monday for a deal to avert a US debt default, as stocks slipped and the IMF feared a "severe shock" to the world economy in a reckoning one week away.

"We need to make the right decision now, and we need to do it because the economy is on the line," Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned with the polarized US Congress seemingly no nearer to a breakthrough.

Reid and Republican House Speaker John Boehner championed rival strategies to raise the US debt limit, deflate the swollen US budget deficit, and ensure the world's richest nation does not run out of cash to pay its bills by August 2.

The plans differed in one critical, politically divisive aspect: Reid's would meet Obama's goal of raising the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling enough to avoid another politically painful standoff before his November 2012 re-election bid.

Boehner -- who has flatly rejected Obama's call for tax hikes on the rich and wealthy corporations -- envisioned a two-step process with increases first to February or March 2011, and later to 2013.

"Time is running short and it would be irresponsible for the president to veto this common-sense plan and run the risk of default. I would encourage the Senate to pass this plan and the president to sign it," said Boehner.

Obama, who cancelled a pair of reelection fundraisers amid one of the most high-stakes standoffs of his presidency, renewed his call for tax hikes on the rich and wealthy corporations despite unyielding Republican opposition.

"The best way to take on our deficit is with a balanced approach, one where the wealthiest Americans and the big corporations pay their fair share," he said.

The International Monetary Fund pressed polarized US politicians to raise the US debt ceiling "expeditiously to avoid a severe shock to the US economy and world financial markets" with the deadline now looming large.

The IMF warned that US debt would total 99 percent of the size of the US economy this year and 103.0 percent in 2012, and urged a blend of spending cuts, tax revenue increases, and reductions in cherished social safety net programs.

The warning from the Washington-based institution, viewed skeptically by many in the US Congress, came as US stocks sank and gold soared in the face of the angry political stalemate on raising the $14.3 trillion US debt limit.

US markets fell sharply on opening and recovered somewhat, but in early afternoon trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average of blue-chip stocks was 0.50 percent down, while the broader S&P 500 had lost nearly 0.34 percent.

Gold and the Swiss franc -- refuges when the dollar and euro look shaky -- both jumped, while the US currency and Asian stocks also slumped, but there were no signs of panic.

Market worries came as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised during a trip to Asia that "intense" wrangling among the White House, its Democratic allies, and Republican foes would reach an 11th-hour compromise.

"I am confident that Congress will do the right thing and secure a deal on the debt ceiling and work with President Obama to take steps to improve our long-term fiscal outlook," the top US diplomat said in Hong Kong.

Clinton chose to make unusual public comments on a domestic political dispute after her foreign counterparts peppered her with "a lot of questions" about the outcome, said US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

"I think it was important for the secretary to make a strong statement of confidence that our system will produce a good result, not only for the American people but for the world economy as a whole," she said.

Washington hit its debt ceiling on May 16 but has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally but can only do so through August 2.

At that point, US leaders will face an agonizing choice about cutting an estimated 40 cents of every dollar in spending and defaulting either on debt payments or on other obligations like government health or retirement benefits.

And finance and business leaders have warned failure to raise the US debt ceiling by then would send shockwaves through the fragile world economy, while Obama has predicted a default would trigger economic "Armageddon."

Montana launches $85 million carbon storage project (Reuters)

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) ? The federal government has given final approval to an $85 million, eight-year pilot project to inject a million tons of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, into underground rock formations in Montana for storage.

The Montana State University project seeks to determine whether carbon dioxide emissions from sources such as coal-fired power plants and cement production can be safely and economically captured and stored instead of being released into the atmosphere.

The Big Sky Sequestration Project comes as the U.S. Energy Department is underwriting numerous carbon capture and storage experiments aimed at reducing greenhouse gas output associated with climate change, government officials said in a statement on Tuesday.

In Montana, geologists have targeted Kevin Dome, a subterranean rock formation in the north-central part of the state that stretches for 700 square miles and has trapped naturally occurring carbon dioxide for millions of years, said Lee Spangler, director of the carbon project and associate vice president of research for the university.

Spangler said the formation features porous rock that will admit gas pumped in from the surface, topped by nonporous rocks that should keep the gas contained.

Development of the site, which includes drilling of injection wells, should be underway this week, with storage of the gas slated to begin in two years.

Scientists intend to monitor carbon dioxide levels to ensure the gas was not escaping and to gauge its effects on surrounding rock and water, Spangler said.

While a million tons of carbon dioxide represents just a fraction of the 7 billion tons the United States emits annually, the Montana site has the potential to store as much as a billion tons of the gas, he said.

The Montana-based project is not the largest of its kind but it is vital to assessing whether such regional capture facilities are viable, Spangler said.

"The estimates of storage capacity are very generous," he said of the dome.

With the high cost of converting carbon dioxide to other uses, research in recent years has focused on capturing and storing heat-trapping gas emissions, Spangler said.

The Montana project relies on $67 million in federal funds and another $18 million in matching funds provided mostly by private partners. Those include oil and gas exploration firms like Vecta Oil and Gas, SR2020 Inc. and Schlumberger.

Carbon capture and sequestration projects have not proved viable for public utilities in the absence of economic incentives, Spangler said.

Earlier this month, American Electric Power Co., one of the nation's largest power plant operators, cited the government's failure to put a price on emissions in its decision to shelve plans to capture carbon dioxide output from a coal-burning plant in West Virginia.

It's not a movie for people looking for a decorous night at the movies. It is a film, though, for folks eager for some good dirty jokes, some refreshingly real female characters - and, just maybe, a new comic voice.

Bridesmaids turns the gross-out comedy genre on its head and emerges bigger and better than its predecessors. It boasts unforgettable breakout performances and is the most important comedy of the year. And the best.

Wiig's brand of comedy is loud, proud and just gosh darned funny.

Never does Bridesmaids ever aim for truly biting commentary, opting to settle instead for a series of poop jokes and scenes of social awkwardness.

The full horror of being a bridesmaid is shown, but Wiig persuades you there is something genuinely loving and sisterly to be found at the end of this incredible ordeal.

By treating funny women as normal people, Wiig has crafted a game-changing comedy that's even better than The Hangover.

The deposed president's body was exhumed in May for its first authoritative autopsy as Chile's independent judiciary began a criminal investigation into the death of Allende and hundreds of other victims of the Pinochet dictatorship.

Dr. Patricio Bustos, who directs Chile's Medical Legal Service, announced the autopsy results, which he described as definitive. Ever since Allende's death, Chile's military has held that he committed suicide, while others said he died fighting. Some claimed he tried to kill himself but was only gravely wounded and was then killed by a bodyguard, who then died as well.

This autopsy supports the version of Dr. Patricio Guijon, who had been part of Allende's medical team and said he alone happened to witness the death.

Allende's daughter Isabel, now a senator, said the result is a relief because now there is scientific proof to support what the family has always believed.

"President Allende, on Sept. 11, 1973, faced with the extreme circumstances that he was living through, took the decision to end his life, rather than be humiliated," Allende said.

Before making the autopsy results public, Bustos and the autopsy team met for several hours with Judge Mario Carroza, Sen. Allende and a lawyer for the family to explain their conclusions.

Asked about how Anthony was paying for her fresh start, Mason replied that many volunteers have offered their help.

Her notoriety could also help her earn money. Experts who have helped other notorious defendants through rough times say she will have opportunities, but it won't be easy for the 25-year-old, who was found not guilty of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, but convicted of lying to investigators.

In response to a question about whether Anthony planned to cash in on her fame, her lead attorney Jose Baez told Fox News Channel late Sunday that she has "certain rights as an individual in this country." Attorneys planned to handle Anthony's affairs in a "dignified manner," he said.

"If she decides she wants to speak publicly about it, she'll make that decision," he said.

Baez and other attorneys didn't respond Sunday to email and phone messages left by The Associated Press, nor did a lawyer representing her father and mother. And in the Fox News interview, Baez declined to talk about his client's whereabouts or state of mind.

Another former Anthony lawyer, Terry Lenamon, said he had no clue where she was headed, and that probably only a few people close to her knew.

"I wouldn't want anyone to know," he said. "I think she needs to go underground and I think she needs to spend some time to get her life back together."

Anthony's July 5 acquittal shocked and enraged many around the country who had been following the case since Caylee's 2008 disappearance. Anger has spilled onto social media sites and elsewhere. Her legal team said on Friday it had received an emailed death threat.

Anthony did not report her daughter's disappearance for a month and was arrested after telling a string of lies about the case to police. Caylee's remains were found in December 2008 near the home Casey Anthony shared with her parents.

Prosecutors alleged that Anthony suffocated her daughter with duct tape because motherhood interfered with her desire for a carefree life, but her lawyers said the girl drowned in an accident that snowballed out of control. Some of the jurors who acquitted Anthony said they believe she bears some responsibility for her daughter's death but that prosecutors failed to prove that she murdered the child.

Anthony had remained in jail to finish a four-year sentence for lying to investigators. With credit for the nearly three years she'd spent in jail since August 2008 and good behavior, she had only days remaining when she was sentenced July 7.

Her public vilification did not ease with her release from jail. "A baby killer was just set free!" Bree Thornton, 39, shouted as the SUV left the jail.

It won't be impossible for Anthony to get a fresh start, though it will be difficult, said Los Angeles-based attorney Thomas Mesereau. His clients have included the late singer Michael Jackson when he was charged with child molestation and actor Robert Blake when he was charged with murdering his wife.

Anthony could accept requests for paid interviews, or a benefactor may be able to help her in the short term, Mesereau said.

"When you have that degree of celebrity, there is usually somebody who would like to get involved," Mesereau said. "The problem is trusting anyone. People are willing to leak things to the media. They're willing to be paid off for information. It's very difficult to find people whom you can trust."

Casey Anthony's relationship with her parents is strained. During trial, Anthony's defense attorneys argued that her father, George Anthony, molested Casey as a child and covered up Caylee's death. He has denied both claims, and neither has been substantiated.

What is known is that Casey Anthony still faces a slew of legal problems even though the criminal charges have been resolved. She has been sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars by a Texas group that searched for Caylee in the weeks after she was reported missing, and prosecutors are seeking to recoup the cost of their investigation into Caylee's disappearance.

Anthony also is being sued for defamation by a woman named Zenaida Gonzalez who claims she has been harassed and unable to find work after Anthony alleged Caylee was kidnapped by a baby sitter with Gonzalez' name. The woman's attorneys had wanted to depose Anthony before she left jail, but the deposition was rescheduled for October.

Any of those civil cases could put a major dent in any money Anthony receives for writing a book, signing a movie deal or doing interviews. Anthony is broke, and her defense team was paid for with taxpayers' money after $200,000 she received from ABC News was spent.

Several book publishers contacted by The Associated Press said they knew of no memoir that was being shopped around and consider her too tainted to sign a deal.

Anthony could avoid the potential liability of hundreds of thousands of dollars from the lawsuits by filing for bankruptcy, though plaintiffs would probably attempt to keep her on the hook for damages if she signs lucrative deals after filing, said R. Scott Shuker, an Orlando bankruptcy attorney.

An important step in building a new life is getting psychological help to cope with her notoriety, severed family ties and newfound freedom, said attorneys with clients in similar circumstances.

"Everything she has been through, that's more than most people can deal with in a lifetime," said Daniel Meachum, an Atlanta attorney who has represented football player Michael Vick when he was convicted of dog fighting and actor Wesley Snipes when he was convicted of tax evasion.

Media relations expert Marti Mackenzie, who specialized in legal cases, said it's important for Anthony to make some kind of public statement soon. She said a standard news conference is out of the question, but Anthony needs to say she made terrible mistakes, that she is grateful to her defense team and that she has thought about what happened every day of her life in jail.

"In traditional public relations language, it's called feeding the beast," Mackenzie said. "Even if you don't give the beast a full meal, you respond. Because once you're part of media scrutiny ... how it is handled once the case is over will help to set a tone."

Bangladesh population grows 10 pct to 142.3 mln (AFP)

DHAKA (AFP) ? Bangladesh's population is up nearly 10 percent in a decade to 142.3 million, but growth is slowing as more women enter the labour force, the government said on Saturday.

Some 300,000 officials made the headcount for the once-a-decade census, going door-to-door in every village, town and city in the Muslim-majority South Asian nation.

The population of impoverished Bangladesh stood at 130 million a decade ago.

"Family sizes are shrinking fast due to the entry of more women into the workplace, cravings for a better standard of living (involving fewer children) and the success of the country's population control programme," head of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Shahjahan Mollah, told AFP.

The preliminary census findings are just slightly lower than the United Nations' estimate of Bangladesh's population at 148.7 million people.

Bangladesh launched the latest census in mid-March with the ceremonial counting of the families of the president and the prime minister.

Obama to name Cordray to consumer job (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama said on Sunday he will nominate former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray to head the new agency charged with protecting consumers from financial fraud and abusive practices on issues such as mortgage lending and credit card fees.

The pick allows Obama to sidestep some of the controversy he would have faced had he nominated Elizabeth Warren, who is credited with conceiving of the idea for the new consumer agency and championed its creation.

But the president is still likely to face a big fight with Republicans on the nomination of Cordray, who is a close Warren ally and whose selection will require Senate confirmation.

Though Obama's fellow Democrats control the Senate, Republicans could use a procedural move to block a confirmation vote.

An event is planned at the White House on Monday to formally roll out the choice.

"American families and consumers bore the brunt of the financial crisis and are still struggling in its aftermath to find jobs, stay in their homes, and make ends meet," Obama said in a statement. He said Cordray had "spent his career advocating for middle class families."

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, called for in last year's Dodd-Frank financial oversight law, will open its doors on Thursday.

Republicans and the banking industry have disparaged the agency as an unnecessary layer of regulation that, if overzealous, could restrict consumer choice and lending.

Senate Republicans signaled on Sunday they would be reluctant to confirm a new head of the bureau unless their demands for major changes were made.

As a senior adviser to Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Warren has been tasked with setting up the new agency but became a lightning rod for criticism from conservatives for her outspokenness on financial industry practices that she believes harm consumers.

But Warren is a hero to many Democrats and consumer advocates who were disappointed at Obama's decision not to appoint her.

Warren will not remain in her role as an assistant to the president, a senior administration official said.

'BEST QUALIFIED'

"With her track record of standing up to Wall Street and fighting for consumers, Elizabeth Warren was the best qualified to lead this bureau that she conceived -- and we imagine Richard Cordray would agree," said Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.

"That said, Rich Cordray has been a strong ally of Elizabeth Warren's and we hope he will continue her legacy of holding Wall Street accountable," Taylor added.

Cordray is also known as a vocal critic of the banking industry. He has been working as part of Warren's team on the effort to set up the consumer agency. In December he was named to head up its enforcement division after losing his re-election bid in Ohio.

Cordray is a five-time champion on the television game show "Jeopardy," which tests contestants' knowledge.

He was known in the state as a leader among state attorneys general in a probe of dubious mortgage foreclosures practices.

In a 2009 interview with Reuters, Cordray said it was his duty as Ohio attorney general to hold Wall Street to account.

He said taxpayers were focused on creating wealth while banks, brokerages and insurers were trying to shuffle around that wealth for their own profit.

"It's a badge of honor for us," Cordray said then about his litigation against major financial firms, including Bank of America.

Obama considered the consumer bureau's creation one of the most important parts of the sweeping overhaul of financial regulations he signed into law a year ago in the aftermath of the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

In May, 44 Senate Republicans vowed to block confirmation unless the agency's leadership was changed to a board instead of a single director, its budget was subject to congressional approval, and other financial regulators had a greater say in its oversight of banks.

"Congress raised concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability, but the Obama administration still hasn't addressed those concerns," John Ashbrook, a spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, said in a statement after the news broke that Cordray would get the nomination.
