FREETOWN, Sierra Leone ? Sierra Leone's top opposition candidate for this year's presidential election has chosen a female running mate.
Kadie Sesay, a university lecturer, will join the ticket led by retired Brig. Gen. Julius Maada Bio.
She is the first woman to be on the presidential ticket of either of the two main political parties in Sierra Leone.
Sesay told The Associated Press on Friday she hopes that her candidacy will "give hope to young girls and women of Sierra Leone."
The pair will run against incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma in the vote now set to take place Nov. 17.
Sierra Leone is recovering from a brutal 1991-2002 civil war that was depicted in the film "Blood Diamond." Tens of thousands were killed in this West African nation.
