Historic Flooding Causes 130,000 Evacuations in Northeast (ContributorNetwork)

Flooding is threatening thousands of citizens in New York, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania as the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee sweep across the north east.

Here are some facts about the ongoing flooding and rainfall in the region.

* Weather.com is warning that this flood event could be worse than that seen in June 2006 or the Agnes floods of 1972.

* 130,000 people have been forced to evacuate in Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland, with half forced to leave Wilkes-Barre.

* In Maryland, Havre de Grace with a population of 11,000 was evacuated.

* Governor Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania is reporting that the state's emergency level is the highest since the September 11 terrorist attacks.

* The Swatara Creek in Hershey, PA has risen to four times beyond its flood level, according to Corbett. Towns along the Susquehanna River are experiencing flooding.

* WGAL in Harrisburg, PA lists 21 counties currently under advisories, watches, or severe weather warnings.

* The Times Leader of Wilkes-Barre, PA says that electricity has been cut off for the city and for Hanover Township. Traffic signals are inoperable and flood gates have been put in place on both sides of Market Street Bridge.

* PennDOT has listed hundreds of roads closures in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York Counties. Drivers are being advised to stay off the roads in eastern Pennsylvania from Harrisburg to New York, New Jersey, and Maryland.

* According to WBNG in Bingham, New York, Broome County Emergency Services has evacuated 20,000 people. Binghamton University shelters are providing refuge for 1,600 people, the largest by far, and isn't taking any more evacuees due to the fact they have reached capacity.

* Governor Andrew Coumo has directed emergency services towards the Southern Tier, Southern Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley, Capital region, Central New York, and Southwest regions of the state in response to flash flooding and major flood conditions. There has been an excess of ten inches of rain in some places.

* Aside from Bingham and Broome County, which may have seen the worst of the flooding, evacuations have affected Johnson City, West Corners, Vestal, Union, Conklin, Margaretville, and Middleburgh.

* Portions of southside Poughkeepsie, New York are suffering from water pressure issues due to a broken water line. Meanwhile, portions of the north side of town have become flooded and residents are being warned they may need to voluntarily evacuate. Some areas of town are seeing bus routes suspended and limited travel advisories.
