An 84-year-old Texas man visiting family in the Detroit area died from West Nile virus, the third death in the state this year, officials said Friday.
Although Texas has hundreds of West Nile cases, Michigan health officers say the man likely got the illness while in their state.
He died in mid-august, but a name and other details have not been released.
Michigan has confirmed at least 47 cases of West Nile, including the three deaths. The virus has also been detected in the blood of 22 blood donors.
Experts say only one in five people infected actually experience any symptoms and that the majority of the population can have the virus and be able to fight it off.
