Grad requirements for anthropology and sociology
Im currently a social studies education major who will be graduating next December. I am also active in research and working on two articles for publication. I eventually want to become a researcher in the education or youth field and am looking into grad schools. My current research deals with social and cultural issues related to students or children in some way and I would like to continue and pursue those interests.
Therefore, I am considering a masters or PhD in anthropology or sociology. However, because I do not have an undergrad degree in anthro or soc, I expect I will have to meet some pre-reqs before starting grad school. Would anyone be able to provide any tips for what those may be?
My other concern is the language requirement. I noticed that many anthro and soc grad degrees require learning another language. First off, whatever research I plan on doing would be in the U.S. in a typical public school setting and I dont intend on focusing on ESL students. Second, I am already exposed to two other languages. One I able speak but ablet read or write (ethnic language) and the other I able read but dont understand or speak (religious language). Point is, if I was to choose either language to study, I am quite sure I would have to begin with beginner level courses rather than being able to test out. I really dont want to study any languages as I dont feel its necessary for what I am interested in pursuing. So does one HAVE to learn another language in order for a grad degree in anthro and soc?
Firstly, congrats on trying to go all the way with Anthro.
Now for your question.
The requirements for graduation vary from school to school. So check with your Dept Head, they will be able to tell you everything you need to know about grad reqs.
As for the language, you may be able to test out of the language requirement, if that language is offered at your school. Otherwise, youll more than likely have to take at least a year (or whatever is required) of another language. Just because you dont plan on leaving the country doesnt mean it wont come in handy, especially if you go into social work. There is a growing Spanish speaking population in this country, so being able to cross that potential language barrier would be a huge plus. Even if you dont want to learn Spanish, any language would, at the very least, Give you the chance to experience something new and exciting
