Leadership Is By Example

Leaders act with judgment and reason

Leaders earn respect and support by exercising good, practical judgment and reasoning ability. The leader?s decisions must be well reasoned and clearly explained, if they are to gain the commitment of the group. Effective leaders do not make leadership decisions based on their emotions, their hunches, or their own self interest. Rather, leaders must weight the issues, apply some good common sense, and then, most importantly, do the right thing.

To be effective, leaders must be respected. In fact, respect is more important than approval. And respect comes from consistently doing what is in the best interest of the group. There will always be people who disagree with a leader?s decision. Yet if that decision was made through clear reasoning and sound judgment, even those who disagree will gain respect for the leader, and will remain committed to the group.

Leaders are patient

Leaders have patience, with people, with frustrating situations, with themselves. Patience is essential when dealing with people. Leaders often find themselves in confrontational situations, where a calm and caring patience can be of great value in resolving the problem. The most worthwhile accomplishments, take time and consistent effort. Leaders have the patience and the foresight to see the ultimate goal, and the long path that leads to it, and understand the value of taking one deliberate step after another. The patience and determination of the leader, sets the tone for the entire group.

Leaders lead by example

Leaders have to be highly skilled at managing themselves, before they can presume to lead others. To be a leader, one must be committed to continual self development and self improvement. Leaders must themselves be focused and goal-oriented, before they can provide strong and decisive direction for an entire group.

When leaders are committed to excellence in themselves, the group becomes committed to excellence. Leaders set the pace by their actions and their priorities. To a large degree, members of the group will duplicate and magnify the efforts of the leader. So there must be something to magnify. If the leader does nothing, the group will do nothing. A thousand times zero, is zero. Leaders who set a stellar example, by giving all they have to the effort, will generate enthusiasm, support, action and achievement within the group.
