We Can Do Plenty About The Weather
Article by Peter Wilson
?Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.? Mark Twain?s famous saying is true in some respects, but we actually are doing a lot about the weather.
While we cannot do much to change weather patterns or prevent catastrophic weather from occurring, the science of meteorology has advanced in many respects. We can now predict what weather patterns will occur and also be prepared for weather emergencies. For example, we can build structures that withstand hurricanes and earthquakes and alert people to approaching storms in plenty of time to evacuate an area.
These developments are a long way from the days when shamans and priests muttered incantations or made sacrifices to appease the various weather gods. It is understandable why they did this because weather is so important to our daily lives.
Did you ever think about how much weather affects us? We wonder what clothes to wear and if the weather will affect a family picnic. More profoundly, the weather affects what type of home we live in, what type of food we grow and eat and what type of animals and plants we have. Leaf shapes and animal hides are affected by local climate.
Stop to think about it: Why do famines happen? Because weather conditions are such that local farmers can no longer depend on traditional crops and they do not have any alternatives to plant. If the conditions last a long time, large groups of people can die of starvation and thirst.
That?s why an accurate weather forecast is so important. By studying temperature, air pressure, precipitation, the terrain and other factors, we can predict climate change and help people adjust practices accordingly.
Meteorology mainly studies two factors: the sun?s heat and the Earth?s atmosphere. The sun?s heat reaches the Earth unevenly. The Earth?s tilt has a large effect on weather conditions and its rotation plays a role in wind speed and direction. The winds affect how air and high- and low-pressure systems move about the planet. Geographic factors also play an important part: mountains and oceans deflect many weather systems. Land masses heat and cool more rapidly than bodies of water.
Each of these factors is just a tiny peace of the weather and climate puzzle of our earth. By changing a small factor, the entire earth?s weather pattern can be affected. That?s why global warming is such a concern. Some scientists believe a temperature change of a few degrees can affect how well the planet sustains life. Little things really do mean a lot when it comes to the weather.
Talking about the weather is a euphemism for mundane chit-chat. But really the subject is much more important than you may realize. Find out more about the weather ? today.
